The deal has to be done before the signing bonuses kick in.

Caps get an elite forward that they can afford due to Backstrom being on LTIR.

Leafs gain some good players and are free to possibly sign more depth by moving Oshie to LTIR for the '24-'25 season.

Or if the Leafs want more LTIR money to play with, put Backstrom in the deal and the Caps can move Oshie to their LTIR.
