Description

The new Utah ownership likely wants to make some big moves this summer via trades and free agency. They are not the Arizona Coyotes any more and will take some steps to become a playoff contender. One of those moves is to acquire Seth Jones for their 1st round 2024 pick. Seth agrees to waive his NMC since he's tired of losing and figures Utah is further along their rebuild than Chicago. Chicago can retain 2M of Jones AAV.

Hawks select Levshunov with the 2nd overall and he becomes their projected #1 RD in a couple of years. With the Utah pick, 6th overall, The Hawks select a forward. Maybe Lindstom if still on the board, or Catton, or even Eiserman.

Meanwhile the Hawks sign a couple of defensemen in Roy and Chatfield to play the right side as placeholders until Levshunov and Rinzel are ready. Monahan and Sprong also signed to bolster the forward group.

By the time the 6th overall needs to be paid , it’ll be 4 years. Even then a bridge is possible and then Jones expires.

I'm not crazy about trading Seth. He's played better than people are giving him credit for. Is he overpaid? Yes but only by maybe $1MM. Not a problem cap wise for the Hawks. As far as the trade goes, I'm okay with it although given the depth of defensemen and lack of depth at forward in this draft, I might be tempted to take Demidov at #2 and then a defenseman like Silayev, Buium or Dickinson at #6. I'm thinking though that the more likely scenario is that Seth stays ad Utah signs Roy and Chatfield and then drafts a defenseman.

I just want to keep Jones. I think he's one of the most underrated players in the NHL considering all the Leafs fans saying hes worth $5M...crazy! Yes our team isn't good right now. He's still 25atoi playing against the opponents top pair and was with essentially a rookie the entire year last year. Yes Vlasic is good, but rookies are still rookies.

I agree Seth is a capable player, though overpaid by a couple of million. And playing 25 minutes is important as the younger defenders learn their way. I'm just looking forward 2 or 3 years and would want Levshunov and a good forward prospect on the cusp of making the team at that time instead of a possibly declining Jones. I have a feeling Seth's contract isn't going to age very well. He probably has 3-4 years left of good play, then the wear and tear of playing all those minutes will come into play. He'll be a boat anchor for the last 2 years, so trade him now while he has value (ripe opportunity if you ask me with Utah) and obtain a future asset that will be coming into his own when the team becomes competitive.

But even if it is 3-4 years. He's still going to be capable of 2nd pair responsibilities and we're still going to have plenty of cap space with all the prospects coming up. I much rather have proper prospect development with veterans on the team than trade away all the veterans.

I'd look to overpay DeMelo for four years, as an interim fix while Levshunov, Rinzel, and others ripen. He's not Seth Jones, but he'd do, IMO.

Grabbing the #6 OA would be a huge win, in addition to our #2 OA... Those two picks could greatly impact the Hawks' future, while enabling Utah to announce to the hockey world - and their fans - that their franchise is new and aggressive. That, plus Utah is further along in their rebuild, so Seth may waive to go there.

If I was CHI I would take Levshunov and Silayev if possible. They get their future RD, and a rare specimen in Silayev. They'll likely be very bad for another year, at the very least, and will be able to pick up a comparable forward to Demidov or (any other forward prospect that they may want). They should have no problem attracting top-talent via free agency in the future if a 1st line winger becomes available. Eiserman would be a good pick if they didn't already have Bedard who is an amazing goal scorer and Nazar who might be a goal scorer as well.

If Anaheim, CLB, or MTL take Silayev, I don't think they should trade Jones for the 6OV unless they can turn that into a young somewhat established forward like Zegras or someone like Marner, but I would assume they could trade Jones+ for Marner straight.

Levshunov and Rinzel could be holding down the top 2 RD pairings by that time. I'll worry about the 3rd pair RD down the road. Also in my scenario, they are signing 4 veterans, 2F and 2D, for the next 3 years to help bring the prospects along.

Depends on what Utah thinks. And they can use a few defensemen on their roster for next year and going forward. They could also market Jones to the new fan base. I think Jones is reasonably paid for what he is at 7.5M. Hence my idea of the 2M retention.
