Why would Chicago give up two 2nds when they are rebuilding and taking on contracts with more term?

Ughhhh Montreal doesn't do the first trade.

The second trade is horrible for Chicago

Excellent question!

Please OP, explain why the Hawks would do this. I mean other the obvious reason of it helps Montreal move all their unwanted pieces and open up cap space.

Hawks obviously decline. They aren't paying a pair of 2nd round picks to take on more cap hit with more term for players who aren't upgrades compared to what the Hawks are giving up. If anything, the Habs are the team adding picks in this trade.

Because they need players like Marchment and Dvorak to create some kind of team chemistry. Chicago needs to be competitive much sooner with Bedard in the lineup.

Too many unrestricted free agents at the end of the next season.

Tyler Johnson is better than both of them

This is asinine. They need to continue what they started and build through the draft. Not spending 2nd round picks on your trash.

Sorry but this would be a totally flawed approach. The Hawks already have a handful of veterans in the lineup this year; Foligno, Perry, TJ, Hall, Athanasiou, Jones, Murphy and Tinordi who will help Bedard and the other young players transition to the NHL.

After this coming season they will still have Hall, Athanasiou, Jones and Murphy under contract and a s**t load of cap space available to spend in an off-season that is looking to have a much better free agent crop. Why give up assets for players from Montreal; another young and rebuilding team; that appear to be disposable (since you are offering them up for trade, I have to assume that to be the case)?

Chicago might as well keep their draft capital, continue to stockpile young players/picks and spend on free agents as opposed to giving up draft capital and eating other teams unwanted contracts.

One follow up question I would have for the OP is, if veterans like Marchment and Dvorak are important to help build chemistry and make the Hawks competitive sooner with Bedard, wouldn’t that also be the case for the Habs with their young guys like Suzuki, Slavkovsky, Caufield, Reinbacher etc? Seems like a contradiction to say one young, rebuilding team needs them while another doesn’t.
