I say the Leafs have to overpay, due to Trelving dealing with his old team and the fact Tanev will most likely be #1 trade bait (League wide) at the TDL.

I only traded Lily because I doubt the Flames would %50 retain on both players. Though %50 trades are usually saved for the deadline and I think the Leafs want Zadorov right now.

But yes, if Zadorov can be had at %50, than Lily trade isn't needed.

If the Leafs want a deal now they will have to significantly overpay, teams that aren't using LTIR are accruing cap space and the Flames can get a better deal from them if they wait it out.

If Zadorov and Tanev come to the Leafs and resign, Lily isn't needed as the Leafs top 4 will have Rielly, McCabe and the 2 Flames, with Timmins on the 3rd pair.

Or you move lily down to the 3rd pair and you have a concrete 3rd pair with zadorov and lily timmins needs to get in some games before I trust him to be 3rd pair for the playoffs cause you forgot about Brodie he’s sticking around too

Teams retain on trades for picks every year it’s just how it goes if they have cap and slots available why not use them to obtain assets?

Brodie's 33 yr old may hinder contract talks, especially if he want a "retirement" deal rather a short term deal, which the Leafs would rather give.

Zadorov is 28 yr old, so a 5 or 6 yr deal doesn't like as bad as giving a 33 yr old a 4+ year contract.
