Rossi

Initial Creation Date: May 9, 2024

Description
I suspect that the Islanders will be looking to trade the 18th overall pick for another young player like they did with Alex Romanov in 2022. That trade has worked out excellently for the Isles so far, giving them a young two-way top 4 defenseman for both the present and the future. Marco Rossi has reportedly been made available by Minnesota and while I don't think he's *exactly* what they need, he would provide cheap scoring depth for next season and a ready-made replacement for Brock Nelson if he leaves next offseason. He also allows for the Islanders to play out another season with Anders Lee and/or J.G. Pageau; since he's still on an ELC, the Isles don't need to move them for cap space to make other upgrades and the team can potentially do better in trades in 2025 when the cap continues to increase and both guys will only have a year left on their deals.

I'm not sure what Minnesota would want back, but obviously 18th overall is the starting point. Maybe you add a later round pick or a young role player like Holmstrom or Bolduc.

Finally, with the addition of Rossi, I'm not sure how Ruslan Iskhakov fits in the lineup anymore. He's NHL-ready, or at least at the point where he has nothing more to prove in the minors. Lou was reportedly unwilling to trade him back in March, so the org has some kind of plan for him. But I feel like subbing him in for Lee/Fasching/MacLean makes the lineup too small/soft/weak defensively.

Isles don't have the pieces necessary for a Rossi deal

What do you think they'd be interested in?

Well the reason Rossi's name is floating around right now is because they were trying to make a deal for Cutter Gauthier. Matthew Knies is another one I've talked about a lot today as a guy they'd probably be interested in for Rossi.

So we're talking big, aggressive forwards of a similar age and caliber. NYI doesn't have anything like that.

Cizikas can't be on the first line next year. I keep being told we don't have enough for Rossi but I think we do.

Okay… So 18th overall pick and a bottom 6 penalty killer for former top 10 draft pick who’s 5th in 5v5 scoring for Minnesota in his rookie season? Sorry but you’re quite a bit of regarding value

I see and you're right, they don't have anything like that. If they're set on that, then the Islanders probably wouldn't be good trade partners. But you can usually find someone like that in the draft. Two firsts would give them some flexibility at the draft to go out and get their guy if other teams aren't biting in trade talks.

If we can't find the deal we're looking for, we just keep Rossi. This isn't a situation where we're actively trying to move Rossi at all costs and just taking the best we can get.

If it works with him, Barzal and Horvat I'm fine with it, especially since in this scenario we'd have better C depth. I don't think we need a top tier 1LW for that line to be dominant, just a talented complimentary player who can keep up and play their role. If Cizikas can excel in that spot, I say go for it.

We may not have enough for him, if what they're looking for really is a young, potential top-6 power forward. I don't think Rossi alone gets you that though and if my team had that kind of guy, I wouldn't be looking to trade him for an undersized, all-offense C unless that's what I desperately needed

Rossi isn't an "all-offense C". He's a very strong two-way player. The only thing he isn't is big. That said, most of his goals are still from going to the front of the net, and he's frequently battling in the dirty areas.
