2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #6: The Quest for Lord Stanley's Cup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyScotty</b></div><div>Will you trade us back Justin Barron then since he's buried on the depth chart and we'll send you Oskar Olausson?
Habs have top 5 in the league blueline depth as far as "futures" are concerned. Xhekaj vs Struble for 7th d-man next year if Mailloux and Hutson both make the team as expected. Barron only has a shot if Savard is traded but then it is just a placeholder until Reinbacher arrives.
Konyushkov, Norlinder, and Engström have a lot of talent to leapfrog or push to get roles in the future; but contract timing might help them down the road.
Who do you think is going to be the 2nd pair: Hutson-Savard or Guhle-Savard?</div></div>
I think Guhle, Savard, Matheson, Xhekaj all stay
1 of Hutson, Mailloux, Reinbacher make it
Which leaves 2 of Harris, Barron, Struble, Kovacevic to make it
I think something like
Matheson-Guhle
Hutson-Savard
Struble/Xhekaj-Harris
Struble/Xhekaj
With Barron and Kovacevic traded/in the minors and Mailloux, Reinbacher in the minors, whoever out of Mailloux/Reinbacher does better gets called up when Savard gets moved at the TDL.
It’s going to be very interesting to see how Hughes handles it

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canesfan21_</b></div><div>They should definitely trade him now since his value is at an all time high, though I don’t know if they want to go with basically all kids on the blue line</div></div>
Montreal is likely keeping Matheson since him and Savard are the only vets (okay technically we have Kovacevic who's 26 but he has 2 NHL seasons under his belt). I think Savard might be gone at the TDL but Matheson is likely finishing his contract in MTL, there's no way we're running an all young blue line, that's just a recipe for disaster

I have a hard time seeing Demidov fall past 5 or 6, I think Montreal might take the risk on Demidov now and Utah showed last year with Simashev, But they aren't scared of the Russians

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canesfan21_</b></div><div>Can we stop with the Necas for Matheson trades please. There is absolutely zero chance Matheson replicates the ridiculous offensive season he just had plus he’s 30 years old</div></div>
I do agree that Necas for Matheson trades are weird, however, Matheson was on a 58 point pace in 22-23 and had 62 this past year, Matheson can replicate his success, especially if he continues to be trusted with the 1D time he's getting in Montreal

Really weird to do this before the draft and give up #61 to move up a combined 6 spots (from 54 to 50 and 20 to 18)

Fair deal, McDonagh was solid in Nashville and knows the Tampa org/system well, Nashville gets assets. What I don't get is how Tampa thinks they can afford McDonagh

Well, Vancouver apart from Silovs didn’t really show up for most of the game, unreal playoff run by Silovs.
Now please, someone eliminate NYR, I couldn’t care less about the rest, just no NYR cup

Vancouver has a though choice about who starts game 7, do you keep Silovs? Is Demko ready to start? Do you play Desmith? That choice could decide game 7

Best bit about this explanation by the NHL is the fact it doesn't explain anything. The rule used here is not broken in any way.
Looks like the tweet icon doesn't work anymore.</div></div>
Well Duchene does interfere a bit with Georgiev (part Duchene, part Makar’s fault, they both played a part in Georgiev being out of position), however Duchene’s out of the crease so theoretically it shouldn’t matter that he interfered

Nichushkin, as part of exiting the assistance program earlier in the year likely had a plan he had to follow to stay out of the program and one of the conditions was likely don't take drugs and we'll drug test you to make sure you don't, he failed it so he gets back into the program, doesn't have to be anything illegal, just has to violate the conditions of his previous exit of the program

Did Val just fix the cap issue
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffW</b></div><div>Well the story I read said he failed a drug test and was placed in the assistance program, sooo couldn't they terminate his contract based on the crime he committed by using drugs. (Similar to Mike richards) or even keep him on the LTIR for the entire season since his suspension is for a minimum of 6 months.</div></div>
Taking drugs probably doesn’t violate a standard NHL contract, especially if it’s a legal drug he’s taking. Also the Avs aren’t in control of his suspension length, the NHL Assistance program is so they will decide when Nichushkin can come back (which is as early as mid-November), the Avs should be prepared for all eventualities which means they should be prepared to get Nichushkin back in the early season, even if he might not necessarily be back then
