Pay someone else to buy him out. Suter's buyout cost is ~$2.87M. Bailey's was ~$2.3M.

Like I was saying though. It doesn't really matter too much on what the opinion is on quality of player because I could easily disagree with you on Dicksinson. $2.65M for a 26/27-year-old is very different than $5M 31/32-year-old. The 2nd rounder seems to be a requirement and let's be clear. You are asking to dump cap. This isn't a Barzel trade. It's not a "hockey trade". It's a cap dump trade.
***EDIT*** All I'm really trying to do is point out real data points as to what ANY cap dump trade might need to look like.

Acquiring Pageau
I will say that on the premise I do agree with your comments about JGP. The issue is it takes two to make a trade and Kyle Davidson (through actions, not words) has been very consistent that it'll take a 2nd round pick to dump cap/salary. Bailey, Dickinson, Zaitsev, Mrazek's was a 2nd in draft value advancing in the draft. We can all have opinions on where these guys rank on ability to play, but that would be included with the 2nd rounder. Zaitsev was a big dump...it took more. Dickinson was much smaller...so Stillman went back. BUT the common theme was a 2nd.
I'd be very open to the trade because I do think we need a center man that plays a 2-way game and we have (2) years of cap flexibility. I think the same with Anders Lee too, but odds are both won't occur.

Even then we'd just buy him out. We don't want his attitude on our team. The Hawks are worse with him on it.

Kinda pointless to propose a Murphy trade with 50% retention when we know what it would take.

What's the best way to break up with someone? There isn't a "best way". He holds the cards. The Leafs can force the situation via media or they can protect him. If he honors his contract he honored his obligations. Just because it makes Leafs fans upset...or frustrated...or anxious because you didn't get assets back for him...That's having your cake and eating it too. That's not a reasonable way to go about it. He's not being the unreasonable one for honoring his contract. The fans are.

Draft trade
The rumor I heard wasn't BUF it was the NJD and it's likely for current players vs futures. It's possible BUF would trade that picks, but like the others have mentioned...it's probably not for more picks. It's for current roster players.

I'm not sure 2024 picks would even be eligible considering Lee currently has a full NTC. We'll have to get to July before his modified list is due...draft over

A CAR trade is saw from a CAR fan
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vikhodush</b></div><div>Think it was my trade. Was trying to think out of the box. I don’t love it and wouldn’t be my first preference but I do think filling in the right side cheaply leaves more cap to bring back some other key players. The big X factor is kurashev. Is he just a result of Bedard or can he keep that pace up? I’m sure it’s more of riding on Bedard coattails but if he fits well and can be a complimentary piece playing with other good players in CAR than might be worth it.</div></div>
Yes
As far as Kurashev goes. To be fair, it's hard to say and there isn't any extra time to figure it out. We're the Hawks "set up for success" two years ago? Not really, no.

AA is a bit of a riddle right now for sure. With all the injuries last year (his included) it's not the worst thing for depth. It might be needed in order to "play meaningful games at the end of the season".

Look at it in a few other ways. Trade him with 50% retention... Same cap hit, but costs the NYR even less. Another team will 100% take him retained for sure!

clear cap space
As a Hawks fan, I'd probably accept. We have (2) years of cap we can spend on. We want a physical RD on a 2 year deal...which this aligns with. Is this better than signing a 2 year UFA like Tanev? I think so and the Hawks get the KK potential and worst case we can flip Trouba retained for some assets if need be.

I agree with Exo however that as time goes on I think it's less and less likely for the Devils to trade down as it seems the quality starts to fall off after 11-12 depending on views of a few players. Devils are better off swinging hard on 10 as SOMEONE will fall there.</div></div>
I will say this in defense of the deal...If the NJD believe they have their young core established (which I don't think is an unreasonable assumption) then getting futures can absolutely help come TDL when the NJD are making a playoff push.

I don't see the NJD as a team looking to trade down, but you never know.
Good picks, like the others mentioned...Demidov is essentially a lock, but optimistic for the other two.
I'd also like to take on another 2 year veteran dump if we have $12M I'm cap space. Injuries happen all the time and depth is another key piece.

The Hawks would take Trouba. It'll cost more than that though. Likely Trouba and the NYR 1st for the NYI 2nd. Something like that, but not a 4th/6th swap for sure.

Trades aside. That draft above is a bit odd. Don't mind the 1st two picks at all, but single weakest position is RD in their farm system and for a 2nd year in a row you only get 1 Dman and again another LD. This is supposed to be a good defensive draft. We need at least two RD drafted this year.
