thought he was done, especially when he didnt look great preseason. change of scenery has done him good. good signing

What would this cost realistically
Norris isnt going anywhere, especially for that weak package. Pageau is a salary dump at this point (Isles got fleeced in that deal).
Even Pinto would garner more than a mid 1st round pick.

bizarre trade
Mikheyev could be on the block...but I doubt the Nucks want anything to do with the dumpster fire known as Dumba. Juulsen has been very good this year. Sad how bad Dumbas game has fallen. Bjugstads size would be a welcome addition though.

(CGY/VAN) - Lindholm for Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz, Jurmo, 2024 1st (VAN), 2024 4th (VAN)
Calgary wins this trade. Kuzmenko may never be up for the Selke...but if you can put up with the odd lazy shift- he can light it up. if not- hes only got 1 more year on his deal.
the 1st isnt likely to be a high pick...but still lots of value.
Brzu- could be the key to this deal.
Jurmo is unlikely to amount to much. might not even come over to the NHL, hasnt progressed at all.
the only way Vancouver wins this trade- they get to the finals with Lindholm being a contributor

Philadelphia Flyers signed Ryan Poehling (2 Years / $1,900,000 AAV)
Voted yes- i think he still has some upside untapped left, and if he continues his progression into a solid 3C- then this is a steal. as a 4th liner its a little pricey- but manageable.

Im surprised he signed anywhere else but with the Isles as he had stated earlier was his only destination, he had decent numbers last year. has a good shot at a cup in Colorado.

Im not a fan of this approach vs signing vets to contracts, and then trading them at the deadline for youthful assets= which you can never have too much. Even if the vets have great seasons- you cant cash in because even eating 50% of a 1 year deal can make that contract too pricey, and this is a HUGE overpay, as a UFA no one else is giving him even $2mil, lucky to break $1mil really. All these inflated contracts cant be sitting well with other gm's as you know agents will be bringing these up as comparables for their own clients.

Not a chance either of those trades happen- giving up a 3rd for a guy who wont play in your top 6? arguably top 8? no thanks
and giving up 4 good assets for Guentzel is insane.

Domi isnt helping the nucks, and Tanev will command more than that. Its all moot for the Leafs this year if they dont do something about their goaltending.

Even for a 3rd line center- thats a lot. and his numbers dont hint at a huge upside. single digit goals- on pace for 30 pts... you can find that on the waiver wire for less than half what theyre paying him.

and to think the Nucks had to throw in picks to get rid of his contract before. and now a huge overpayment. nice cushion for not making the playoffs for the next few years. shows you what the icetime and opportunity will do to your stats.

Love this deal as it means the Leafs arent serious about winning the Cup. Another expensive top forward hasnt worked so far, so keep on doing it again! perfect sense. Dont worry about a weak defense and a terrible goal tending situation...that just fixes itself, its science.

(SJS/VAN) - Cicek, 2024 6th (SJS) for Studnicka
wasnt crazy about the canucks picking him up in the first place, he seemed like your typical waiver wire pick up, easily replaced- hoping that the promise he had as a 2nd round pick with size manifested into something more than that...but it didnt happen. Maybe with more icetime he can figure it out in SJ, but at least the pick coming back gives the nucks another longshot.

Caps
Canucks dont need Edmundson with the addition of Zadorov, unless Soucy is out longterm or they move someone else. Garland has actually played really well- just hasnt put up the numbers, and gets very little PP time. He is overpaid for a 3rd liner though. More likely they add Bear and/or move Friedman for help elsewhere.
Kudryavtsev has put up good numbers in junior- could be a sleeper.

(CGY/VAN) - Zadorov for 2024 5th (CHI), 2026 3rd (VAN)
I hate that the Nucks had to trade another pick away, but this is a great deal, hopefully they can resign him or trade at the deadline for more than they paid. hes an overpaid very good bottom pairing guy- not quite top 4. this would make the bottom 4 (with a healthy Soucy) very big: Zadorov, Soucy, Cole, Myers. thats not bad at all.

Thread:
(VAN/CHI) - Beauvillier for 2024 5th (CGY/CHI)
Beau had 18 goals last year- not terrible, but with Mikheyev back and DGP playing with Miller on the 2nd line... he was stuck on the 3rd and 4th lines (and no PP time). Hard to produce with so little ice time, and equally challenged linemates. Beau could easily rebound to 20 goals again, just needs icetime and a decent center/set up guy. paying 4mil for a 3rd liner was a luxury the nucks couldnt afford.
The 5th rnd pick is disappointing, and the capspace it created isnt as useful as it wouldve been at the start of the season. Only UFA out there worth chasing is Bear- and he shouldnt comman anything near that, but this will give them options at the TDL...just hopefully not another rental

Detroit Red Wings signed Patrick Kane (1 Year / $2,750,000 AAV)
Im surprised he didnt sign with a top cup contender...but maybe he wanted the cash (last contract perhaps) over a possible longer cup run. That injury is almost impossible to come back from, the chances this is a great signing...are slim.

marner
The cap wont go up that much every year- there is still escrow being held back, and when the cap goes up-so does the minimum, those minimum contracts wont be that cheap, nor does every 4th liner sign that cheap. Letting Kuzmenko walk and then paying Marner twice as much? I doubt it.

3-Team Garland Trade
Canucks would pass. garland isnt bad, and he doesnt get much pp time (and all their best players are on unit #1, 2nd unit is weak). They have plenty of expiring contracts after this season, so while he may be overpaid- its not a pressing concern.

Tanev
l like Garland- he hustles and his analytics were very good iirc, his numbers wouldve been better if he ever got much PP time, or played with Petey or Miller on a regular basis (and its a big drop off after that). But ...the canucks have a few smaller players and few large physical players, he isnt what they need- especially with the emergence of Kuzmenko. His contract is too rich for his production now...but if he got top 6 minutes and PP time...it would look like a fair contract.
