McDonagh wouldn't waive, a 2nd is not enough, and Saros will probably ask north of 8 million per on an extension which is not a contract the Leafs can afford.

Leafs would want picks and prospects coming back, or a younger top tier defenceman.

Face it, you have no leverage. As it stands right now you have two choices. Let him walk or sign him to some absurd contract he wants and be 1st round nobodies forever.

I think a deal gets done this summer, probably after July 1st when his bonus is paid. The return will be cap flexibility, a couple of picks to play with at next year's deadline, and a couple of prospects. That's more than good enough.

if he is signed to an extension in TOR, he will be unmovable.
No one else wants to pay him the 12-12.5 mil he wants. No one.
He will either sign in TOR long term.... or he will hit FA and get smacked with a dose of reality.
He probably gets 9 mil.

Value wise, pretty fair trade. But Marner has no reason to waive to Nashville. Leafs actually like the trade better without McDonagh, cause they would prefer to be have the cap for this season and next.

McDonough is a fine player but a 7 million that’s way too much. Saros will be due for a MASSIVE payday which is never good idea for a GOALIE that’s about to turn 30. Signing Marner puts us in a much better position now and long-term.
