Roy Montour Bert Domi Roslovic TVR Stolarz Gus

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2024
Published: May 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In this AGM I am making the assumption that Marner waives to Washington AND he has agreed to a new contract AND he is traded before the draft. I am well aware that he cant sign the contract until July 1st. But his agent has this deal in place.

I also assume that Gus doesn't get a huge raise. He may though.

I also assume that Roslovic hasn't proven enough for a team to drop big money on him and he takes a 1 year show me deal. He may get more years and more term.

Thoughts?

That's going to be a big time NO from Chicago. If they get desperate enough they can stick Kaiser on the right side.

Agree with virtually any trade has to come with an extension....and a team that can afford him this season.
I'm just wondering if team are willing to give up those picks also. Would Washington be better to have TVR, 8m in cap and keep their picks, instead of one Marner.

You might think I'm crazy when I suggest...would the Leafs be better to trade Marner for nothing....so they could have 12m cap this year, spend on two Dmen with five years of term. Is that better than one year of Marner?

Let's be honest. A team will eat all of Marners cap and pay for him as well. So I don't think the 11m for free scenario makes sense. I would do Tavares and his 11m for free. But a team will pay a 1st +++ for Marner.

We could get some young guys (mctavish) or a top 6 f/top 4 d package. there are a lot of options

McTavish is untouchable. We aren't getting him for Marner.

Keep in mind Marner has a full no move clause, so he is in full control of where he goes. That lowers his value a lot. AND we get 8m in cap space here also.

You say we could get a top 6f or top 4 d... but we get 8m cap space to sign a guy like that in FA. So we gets 3 x picks and a hard working defensive bottom pair d.

But let's say there is only team that Marner will agree to too, traded to and extend. Or only one team that take on his cap year.
Tell me, would you take my suggestion. Trade Marner for nothing, but get 12m in cap to so two good UFA Dman could be signed to mid term contracts. To me, that sounds a lot better than just one year of Marner, and having him leave as UFA.

I wouldn't trade him for nothing, simply on principal.

I love Marner but the past 2 off seasons I really thought we should trade him. People always said our problem was 4 forwards making 40m. I disagreed. I thought it was 3 forwards making over 33m and Mitch was the clear answer. But unfortunately trading Mitch this year, still leaves us with 3 forwards making over 35m haha. So Mitch and Tavares would be my moves. BUT they both have full NMCs. We will see what happens.

Thanks for your opinion "of principal". Knowing that Tavares, Marner and Matthews wouldn't/can't be traded, I was kinda surprised that the Leafs extended Nylander mid season. Not that really disagree with the contract "that" much though I still think the Leafs paid a premium price. I understand everyone's concern about having too many top end contracts with forwards. But Leafs biggest problem in the playoffs is that top end guys haven't produced enough.

I agree - I actually disliked the Nylander contract though. 10.25m was my top end. I would have traded him if he wanted more.

Looking to re-structure a team by using UFAs isn't a good idea.

First it's expensive.
Second it's aging your team.
Third there is an unknown factor.
Fourth it takes time to build chemistry.
Fifth it can disrupt the locker room.

I like Holmberg but he hasn't proven to be a proper #3C. He is more of a 4LW or a 4 or 5C. Roslovic is better for sure. 1 year, low risk move.

How do you recommend they upgrade their D then?

Trading Nylander would have had the Leafs in the same situation as Marner. Players just because they are on their expiring contract, don't have to be traded. They are a teams "rentals" Gee, the Leaf (and your post) have a signed UFA and the Leafs didn't have to give up anything for me
If Nylander hadn't been resigned, and was not resigned this summer. It would have given Leafs 11.5m in cap to spend elsewhere the summer.

I personally didn't believe we were cup contenders this year though. I thought we wasted our time with Lyubuskin and Edmundson. We needed a true top pair RD and we didn't go for it.
So I would have preferred the assets and try again next year.

I mean if you don't like Holmberg that's fine but you'll be disappointed after you start watching Roslovic play

Look at the wasted draft picks the have made in the past six years on lousy TDL deals. All those picks wasted for one playoff round victory. Good GMs don't depend TDL acquisitions, they have their teams ready in October. But between Lou, Dubas, Trevling and Shanahan, they don't seem to know this concept.

Continue to throw 1st Rd picks for a star rental Dman, with a 4th Rd pick added for retention at the TDL.

A quick look and I see the BJ's and Provorov as a potential high end rental Dman.

Or you can try another reclaim project, though it failed with Klingberg, the Panthers have a success with EOL and Det with Ghost.
