Description
- Trade Johnsson and Kapanen. They more than likely won't take anything less than 3M on a bridge or long term and at those rates, T.O needs would have no option but to get rid of Zaitzev, Marleau and probably someone else to fit under the cap. Just for fun lets assume they each get 4.5M offer sheets from playoff teams. (most likely not lottery picks in following years)

- Brown becomes expendable and the most likely casualty of having expensive core players. paying player 2.1M to play the 3rd and sometimes 4th line isn't a luxury T.O can do right now unfortunately.

- No Marleau retirement. He's not throwing 4.25m away and is still good enough to play, although not for a 6M cap hit.

- No Zaitsev + good asset for 7th rounder in return. Teams won't do TO any favors, so even though Zaitsev is an ok player, TO will have to pay a decent price to get rid of him for zero cap coming back. he's still owed a lot of money on that contract.

- No trading Nylander while his value is lower than it was before. Trading him this off season would be silly. He's better than he's played this year.

Is this soooooo bad? Its not ideal but its not the end of the world either. Leafs don't need to save money for 100 years. They need it this year mainly. After that Marleau, Muzzin come off the books and the cap probably goes up again. Obviously if a team WANTS Zaitzev, trade him. If Marleau WANTS to retire, let him but its not necessary. Leafs even with this lineup below are a playoff teams and a decent one also.

Also don't get your panties in a twist, the lines are not thought out at all. Just put guys in to show where they could fit but I don't know much of the TO farm system.

I think your too rich on marner by over 1 million.

I think you use that million plus the space you have plus the guy you are replacing to get one of Johnson or Kapanen to sign a 1 year bridge.

For example 1 million plus bracco's 700k plus the 700k cap space is 2.4m. I think you can get Johnsson or Kapanen to sign a one year bridge for 2.1-2.3. But you'll have to pay them more next year...

How would you convince them to sign that low? "Pretty pleaaase"? They'll take this negotiation at least to the late summer and by then, if we imagine a worst case scenario, someone will send in offer sheets for either of them.

BUT even then, lets assume you do that, and he signs for minimum 2.5M (anything less is basically spitting in their face), the team would have no cap space what so ever. I very purposefully left enough money in cap for another 700K player in case of emergencies. which most Gm's do.

I don't think it's spitting in their face. It's a bridge. Look at Frank Vatrano. He just signed for 3 years for 2.533.

If you sign for 1 year you get less money. He's actually a pretty damn good comparison for johnson. Also did you know that Johnsson is only about 6 months younger than Brown?

How do you get them to sign? You get them to bet on themselves. Just like Marner did when he refused to sign last summer or Johnson himself did when he accepted his qo last summer (many on here thought he would make over 1.2, I even saw as high as 2)

So you tell them (more like Johnson as he has less value), look, your unlikely to get over 4 mil this year from anyone. If we had the cap space we could probably sign him for term around 3.5, give or take. You take the 2.1-2.3 this year and gamble on yourself. You put up 25/50 and are now only 2 years from UFA, you have more leverage. We will also have the cap space to pay you. You can push for high 4s then. If you explode well the sky is the limit

Vatrano signed in Florida where the tax is significantly less. He has less points than both guys do right now. If he gets 2.5, is it a stretch Johnsson and Kapanen get 3M? IMO no.

They don't need to bet on themselves. They'll get 2-3 year deals regardless. the cap they've proven will be justified. the term won't be. They can't ask for 6 year deals at 4M but they can ask for 3M at 2 years very easily.
