Description
MTL has a really good prospect pool. Yes, more prospects are good, but what they need is a LHD for next year. Gus is the perfect fit. He got 60 points last year and wasn't given the reins to the team until Q left. So November 4th...ish is when he was allowed more control of the defense. There's still upside to his game if he gets a full season. The Blackhawks have a really good defensive prospect pool...so I'd even be willing to have Alexander Romanov stay in MTL as a future LHD whenever the KHL allows him to leave. BUT 60 point...puck moving...PP QB...LHD...that costs $1.2M.... NOT CHEAP TRADE VALUE. Muzzin got a late 1st and (2) 2nds. That "Value" is what it would take. The #15OA and the CBJ 2nd? Taking on $2.6M in Karl Alzner is worth the 2nd rounder in MTL.

Who I would Draft with these picks.
1.) Cozens...he can either be a future center or next to Duchene.
2.) Spencer Knight - Need a long term replacement option in net
3.) John Beecher - Natural LW and Hawks in need of more forward prospects.
4.) Lassi Thomson - Allow him time to develop.
5.) Kaedan Korczak - Another Dman for the long term future of the hawks. Allow him time to develop.

Trades
CHI
  1. Alzner, Karl ($2,000,000 retained)
  2. 2019 1st round pick (MTL)
  3. 2019 2nd round pick (MTL)
  4. 2019 2nd round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Let's be real. The prize here is (3) fold.

!.) Grand Prize is Gust. 60 point LD playing next to Shea Weber that costs $1.2M
2.) Shedding $2.6M of cap in Alzner that's just wasted space.
3.) ZERO of MTL's prospects leave. MTL has a ton of solid prospects. Poehling, Suzuki, Romanov, Brook, Primeau, Evans, Lindgren, etc.. THEY ALL STAY!
MTL
  1. Anisimov, Artem
  2. Fortin, Alexandre
  3. Gustafsson, Erik
Additional Details:
AA is a very servicable Centerman that can be net front presence. Not that MTL is salary drive, but it's less than his cap hit and it's only for 2 year. Alzner is for 3 years and doesn't play in the NHL. Keep that in mind.

Why though? I don’t see what this gets done, getting picks as if you’re rebuilding but signing Duchene as if you’re making a playoff push, it just confuses me

Thanks for the question. To me...it serves a couple of purposes. Drafting Cozens. Can he jump to the NHL right away??? IDK. I'm going to be honest here and let you know I haven't watched him play a ton....so...I left him in the WHL for another year to develop. With that said...The Hawks are in more of a cap situation than people think. IT'S NOT HERE TODAY, but it will be here next year. Debrincat is the real F'ing Deal. He's going to get Marner type money. This prepares for that so the Hawks don't immediately go into Cap Hell again. It was painful to watch Sharp/Tuevo leave for nothing. I can easily see Bowman Tossing Seattle a 2nd to take Alzner over Murphy. AND the Hawks need an elite goalie prospect. So the glaring need is still there...Defense...But you also need to rely on who you drafted over the past few years. Joki/Mitchell/Boqvist/Krys/beaudin are all looking for roster spots. There's $9M left too...so if this isn't enough...Maybe Hainsey for a 1 year deal?

I guess in short...to me this is the definition of retool. All these players will be ready while Dutch is a Hawk. (Heck, Cozens at least 2020 or don't take him @ #3OA!) I do think Next year this team makes the playoffs and then home grown talent...when developed...will be enough to be contenders. It's not a get rich quick scheme, but winning the lottery certainly helps.

MTL fans here. You actually asking a lot for this. The thing is that Gustafsson has only one good season so far, so there is always a risk he is a one-hit wonder. But we would upgrade our D with him nevertheless. Getting rid of Alzner is not despreciable also. I'm not saying you are out of track, but for our three first pick, it's a big risk for us. I'm pretty sure Jokiharju and Boqvist are untouchable right. Let's say we add Nicolas Beaudin in the mix ? Now sounds interesting. MTL had a lot of interest in Beaudin in last year's draft.

Thanks for the thoughts. You're right that it's certainly is a lot to ask for. Beaudin is a tough one. I wouldn't say no to anything right off the bat, but Beaudin himself is a 1st rounder that's playing REALLY well. It's one thing to be a 1st rounder, but if you're continuing to develop...you're stock goes up. So for Beaudin alone, you're probably looking at a 1st round #20OA...he was #27OA. Maybe the Hawks include another prospect. He'd be tough to trade, BUT that would be for the MTL 1st alone. Nothing else...no Gus either.

***EDIT*** Also keep in mind that zero prospects leave the MTL system too. So it's not like Primeau is gone or Poehling etc... This trade is a "We're ready for the next step" trade.

I agree that no one of MTL's current prospects leaves. But with our first three picks, all in the first 50s, it's a pretty big prospect pool that we let go. So I think there is at least one Chicago's prospect should go the other way. Am I wrong to say that, between Beaudin, Boqvist and Jokiharju, Beaudin is the easiest to move ? In this case I think he would need to be in deal IMO. It would give us :

Alzner, 1st 2019, 2nd 2019, 2nd 2019 (CLB) to Chicago
Beaudin, Gustafsson, Anisimov (I don't think Fortin necessary here) to Montreal

Don't know if it's done deal, but seems fair for both part. Don't you think ?
