Description
Step 1 - Lucic: Oilers have to move on. They can continue paying for this mistake for a few more years, or they can do what it takes to unload him and start the healing process.

Step 2 - Nugent-Hopkins: I think he can bring in two decent wingers. The plan is to acquire 2 players in the 40-50 point range, and turn them into 60-70 point players on McDavid or Draisaitl's wings.
(Note: I picked Montreal because I know they have the cap space and wingers to spare. Other options/teams can be looked into.)

Step 3 - Braun: I'm not exactly sure how much it would take, but options are somewhat slim without moving this year's 1st and more. Personally, I think Edmonton should pay a higher price to acquire someone better. More options may present themselves as teams start making roster decisions for next season. At least consider this a placeholder until other possibilities open up.

Step 4 - Offload Gagner, Manning, and/or Russell, if at all possible. Cheaper replacements can be found in the UFA market. That would free up around $10M extra. Retain if necessary on Gagner and Manning. Even moving half their cap is a win.

Step 5 - Using the $10-20M freed up by these moves, target one of the UFA wingers that can be signed with term. (Skinner or Nyquist for example.)
The remainder goes to plugging holes on a short term basis. Bottom 6'ers with good work ethic and two-way ability preferred, on 1-2 year deals to fill the roster.

I'm showing around $10M remaining, not counting scratches and retaining half on Gagner/Manning (total retention is close enough to the cost of burying them in the minors anyway). That can be used to upgrade the players signed to fill the holes and possibly pick up a solid backup.
(Note: I didn't address Edmonton's goaltending, because they've already made their decision in the crease. You have to give Koskinen the season, with a better team in front of him, to see if that was the right decision.)

Step 6 - Prospects will fight to push guys out of the lineup, and they will start on the 3rd line if they do. No more McDavid ticket until you're tall enough for the ride.

Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Boedker, Mikkel ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Edmonton pays Lucic's $3M signing bonus prior to trade.
Lucic waives his NMC for this trade and for expansion. Ottawa will give him an opportunity to re-establish himself before going to Seattle.
OTT
  1. Lucic, Milan
  2. 2020 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Ottawa receives a 1st round pick, with the expectation that they will keep Lucic for one season, and then pay Seattle to take him in expansion. They will earmark a 2nd and 3rd for that purpose, but attempt to lower that cost by showcasing Lucic.
Worst case: They give Seattle the lesser of their three 1sts and hope Edmonton's pick is better than the one they give up.
Best case: They give Seattle only a 2nd round pick.

Alternative: Ottawa chooses to keep Lucic or Seattle doesn't want him. Since they won't be required to protect him, he isn't costing them more than his salary/contract in any case, and they've already been duly compensated with the 1st. They will hope the pick is a lottery pick, not a bad bet given the Oilers' struggles to reach the post season.
2.
EDM
  1. Shaw, Andrew
  2. Tatar, Tomas
Additional Details:
You could swap Shaw with Armia, but I personally feel like Shaw would help Edmonton more. Especially if he can replicate this year's performance, and he's spent more time in the top 6.

You can also swap Tatar with Drouin. Drouin is the more talented player and has a higher likelihood of breaking out if playing with skilled linemates. Tatar however, is the more reliable player and not untalented himself.

Read this trade as one of:
Tatar + Shaw
Tatar + Armia
Drouin + Shaw
Drouin + Armia
MTL
  1. Nugent-Hopkins, Ryan
  2. Sekera, Andrej
Additional Details:
The principle of this trade is to exchange Nuge for two wingers. Montreal is one team I know can afford to make such a deal involving established NHL players. You might get more "potential" in a package elsewhere, but the goal is to make the playoffs THIS SEASON and stop the festering in Edmonton.
3.
EDM
  1. Braun, Justin
Additional Details:
Braun is the most likely victim of the cap crunch and expendable if the Sharks are able to re-sign Karlsson.
SJS
  1. Bear, Ethan
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Sharks are low on RHD prospects and Bear should be about ready for the NHL full time.

Ottawa will not retain salary to take on Lucic trade. Edmonton will either have to buy him out or add a lot more to take that contract.

It's possible, but he'll have to earn a spot first. Unknown quantity at this point.

Did you read, or was it not clear? The goal is for Lucic to go to Seattle. It's only costing Ottawa $1.5M extra to host him for 1 year.
Boedker's $2M retention (50%) is $1.5M actual dollars. Ottawa's portion of Lucic's salary is $3M (Oilers already paid him $3M signing bonus).
Ottawa's total salary paid is $4.5M and they would have been paying Boedker $3M, so the difference is $1.5M.
Not sure if that's clearer or more confusing. Sticking Out Tongue

I agree but the oilers signed him to one year for a reason
