Description
Doesn't have to be Montreal, Im just using any team with extra cap space to fasciliate Tor having almost zero cap burden and the other team acquiring him only having to pay 50% of his current cost.
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Marleau, Patrick
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Toronto effectively gets rid of all of his cap and since the 3 way ends up being to the team he wants to go to, he should be willing to waive for this to work.
2.
MTL
  1. 2019 3rd round pick (CHI)
ARI
  1. Marleau, Patrick ($3,125,000 retained)
Additional Details:
If Arizona really wants Marleau, this significantly cuts his cost in cap and the value needed to get him is pretty minimal. 3rd or 4th whatever it takes. Could be LAK or whomever Marleau accepts to go to.

Agreed. 3-way trade is a best way to move Marleau. I've already constructed one between CHI, ARI and TOR. I'd appreciate feedback on it.

I get the feeling that Arizona doesn't particularly want Marleau, they're more intrigued by what they can get as a consequence of taking on his salary. And it doesn't hurt that they could use his veteran leadership for their young core.

If that's the case than so be it. I can't know for sure so Im assuming they actually want him as a player more so than the pick that may come with him. I kind of doubt Arizona is ok with taking on his salary without giving any in return though. They ahve some players to sign and not a ton of cap space for a team that has historically never went all the way up to the cap. Marleau isn't an empty contract. That's still 4.25M of actual salary to pay. Unless the trade happens after Marleau's bonus is paid. The that changes a lot obviously.

I'm not ruling out the fact that they could just want him and if thats the case, I agree a 3 team format makes the most sense. But if they were to do it straight up, my guess is that AZ would send TOR some salary back. For example:
AZ: Marleau, Kapanen (Or similar young forward piece)
TOR: Goligoski (Lefty but plays right side), Fischer, 3rd Round Pick (CHI)

Actually just listened to a few podcasts, it looks like the main gain will be to get Marleau after his bonus is paid out. Which changes the complexion entirely. For a team with no cap problems at all, Marleau at 1.25M is great deal. So it may be more attractive than previously thought. I imagine the Leafs don;t care too much about the salary and its only the cap they're worried about. So it may just work out nicely.

As for Kapanen, etc this is the way I see it. If you can move Marleau's full cap as well as facilitate a Zaitsev trade with minimal cap coming back, what need is there for the Leafs to trade anyone else? They already have Gardiner leaving, now Marleau and Zaitsev, maybe throw in Brown for a pick and all of sudden the Leafs have cleared enough cap to sign Marner, Johnsson and Kapanen and keep the rest of the team intact. The idea of trading anyone of Marner, Kap or Johnsson only revolved around not having the cap to do so. They should after all those trades above have the cap space now.
