Also dont know why the Devils would do that trade, just dont really see what benefit that is for them?

No, he didn't. Stop making things up. From his exit interview this season:

“I’m 20 games from 1,000, so I don’t think I’m retiring,” he said. “I’ve got three years left on my contract. I want to be an L.A. King. I want to help change things around here, but I don’t have trade protection, so whatever happens, happens. And I never talked about retiring, either. That never came out of my mouth.”

Of course he would say it after the fact, all players give sound bytes like that to take any controversy off them. Usually if one of the big guys reports it, where there is smoke there is fire. No different than a player coming out saying I never asked to be traded or I love playing here I hope to resign, then they are traded or leave in free agency.

Go back and watch it again. Bob McKenzie never claimed that Carter said that he would retire if he was traded. Bob McKenzie said that the structure of Carter's contract was "interesting" in that if Carter were to be on the trade block, he could hypothetically threaten to retire to block that trade and it would impose hefty recapture penalties on the Kings, essentially giving him an unofficial no-trade clause. At no time did McKenzie ever suggest that Carter or his agent claim that he would retire if traded.

Carter's interview at the end of the season put that rumor to bed. It was discussed heavily on the official Kings blog. He never said it.
