Pittsburgh needs to stop trading away its 1st round picks. The prospect cupboards are bare and the core only has a handful of quality years left in them.

I think the prospect cupboard being bare is a little bit of a myth... Certainly there are no high percentage prospects, but there are a few (Addison, Poulin, Joseph) that have high end potential. There are also a lot of solid lower ceiling prospects in the system (Blueger, Johnson, Bjorkqvist, Hallander, Legare, Angello, Pavlychev, Lafferty etc). Its certainly not flashy, but its a solid group and should keep a steady flow of cheap lower lines players joining the team (which was a big part of how we won the last two cups). However you do have an argument. Should the team model itself after a team like San Jose, keep 1sts, and try to keep the window open indefinitely by bringing in new stars, or should they go the old boom-and-bust route and try to win again in the next 3-4 years and then go full Los Angeles and try to rebuild. I think the team is going down the latter path which is why I think getting JJ off the team should be the top priority, but there are a lot of signs this offseason that our GM is switching plans by getting younger.

people who have no idea what they are talking about are trading JJ with a 1st. Period.
You go look at the free agent pool for LD.

Kronwall is 38
Chiarot
Hutton
Phaneuf is 34
Gardiner is an arm and a leg to sign because he's realistically the bets of whats left and that's not saying much.
Andrew MacDonald
Michael Del Zotto
Morrow
David Schlemko

Take a good look at that list and tell me it doesn't suck.
If you don't already have a young player capable of stepping into your roster you are screwed. There are multiple teams looking for defense and the season hasn't even started. Just wait till injuries start piling up. They will trade him at no cost, if that is their plan.

What nonsense, It sounds like your thinking hasn't quite caught up to the salary cap era. JJ is right at the bottom of that list by most metrics anyway, but more importantly has a ridiculous cost of 3.25 for the next four years. Its about the contract more than the player, and there are more-or-less three ways you trade that contract:
1) Take a bad contract back - this shouldn't be an option for Pit as they're a cap team with a limited cup window.
2) Include a sweetener, most likely for a rebuilding team who won't mind JJ's cap hit. In Pit's case this should be a draft pick not a roster player. Low first round picks are low % on being an NHL player at all so there is about a 2/3 chance you're not even giving anything up here.
3) Pray until somebody panics/goes crazy and offers something for him. Although this does happen, its very rare and certainly can't be relied on as a team building strategy. Besides, JJ is close to untouchable - he is literally one of the worst D-men in the league.
