A few reasons. First off, he's going to be 34 when the season starts, and he has 7 years left on his deal. He will be declining for the entirety of the contract, and $6.8 million is a lot of money. Second, the recapture penalties are an absolute nightmare. Third, we have a lot of defensive prospects, and they will more than likely be ready for the NHL by next year. Our defense will be built up by our young defensemen, not by 34 year old defensemen on bad contracts.

Also we're somehow giving up Laine in this trade, which makes no sense whatsoever.

Ok let me counter. He's probably gonna retire in 3-4 yrs, which leads up perfectly to the recapturing comment, it's on Nashville not WPG or MTL.
And on a side note, Price's GAA went down by almost a full goal when Weber got back from injury for the 2nd half of the season.
