Description
This post goes to show how poor a job Jim Benning has done at the helm in Vancouver. Hindsight is 20/20 but even at the time of the deals term and dollar for Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel and Myers were outrageous. Overspending on July 1 is the worst mistake any gm can make. Wait a couple of days and let the market set itself and then go bargain shopping.

Ferland was one decent example of being patient and getting a player at a fair cap hit. Bargins could have been found on Dzingel and Johansson.

The one trade during his time at GM that made no sense was acquiring Gubrandson for McCann a 2nd and a 4th. I won’t even get into what the draft picks could have been, but it what world do you trade a 19 year old Center who just had 18 points for an older 2nd/3rd pairing plus give up picks. Made no sense at the time and looks even worse now that McCann has found his game in Pittsburgh.

Second trade that made no sense was the J.T. Miller trade. Yes I really like Miller as a player.. but Instead of making a splash at the draft in front of the home crowd make Tampa sweat the cap crunch. I’m convinced that if they wait they can probably get him without giving up a first. Or if Jimbo read the market and understood he could get Dzingel and Johansson at bargin deals then you don’t have to trade any draft capital for Miller.

Finally tell your billionaire family ownership to stop tweeting about the team and use a couple million of dollars to acquire and buyout Patty Marleau for an additional first round pick.

In recap this team is better than the current version the Canucks will be dressing come training camp. They have close to 7 million in cap space with Boeser signed long term. With an additional 24 million coming off the books to resign McCann, Virtanen, Stetcher and Markstrom. Plus another 25 million the following year to resign Petey, Hughes, Johansson, Dzingel, Edler and Demko.

Finally they have two picks in the 2020 NHL draft which is supposed to be stacked. #firebenning

23 years old with 35 points last year making less then 1.5 million.. every team in the NHL could use that production. The point of it was trading him at 19 for Gudbrandson who was a train wreck in Vancouver

That trade was dumb for sure. Just pointing out McCann is nothing special. A lot of PIT fans are hyped up because of his totals after he was acquired but he had 4 empty net goals in 19 games.

i agree with a lot of what youre saying but (other than ferland now) this team would have no grit VAN needed guys to replace burrows and Kelser (enter Beagle, Rousell) ,
Roussel IMO was a great signing! he put up a career high in points (in 15 less games than his previous best).

another thing to note is the D. injury prone, inconsistent and light duty. Myers and Benn will help fix that i have no issue with the value of Myers contract.. would feel a lot better if it was a 4 year deal though. but that's free agency. teams were offering him more (look at Trouba's deal) 6x6 is great value then his projected 8m ask only the term will cause issues.

Can always find gritty players on one or two year deals with low cap hit. Can’t overpay term and dollar for third and forth liners imo
