Description
-re-sign important RFAs and bring back Francouz if he has a solid year

-bring back Soda for 1 year in a lesser role. it might be an overpay but its only 1 year and the Avs have a ton of cap space

-bring in UFA winger Simmonds on a 1 year deal. it might be an overpay but its only 1 year and the Avs have a ton of cap space. He brings some extra physicality and could play on PP2 if needed

-Make a trade for a rental winger. I think NJD will be sellers both in the 19-20 season and the 20-21 season. Kyle Palmieri is a top 6 caliber winger but will be slotted on the 3rd line since Bura-Kadri-Donskoi is clicking. obviously the lines can change over time but this is what I would project at the moment

-keep high end prospects in the AHL/WHL/NCAA for one more year. Bowers and Kaut will be knocking on the door and may get some NHL time if there are injuries but will also play top line mins in the AHL regularly. The Byram situation isnt ideal because of the stupid CHL-NHL agreement but will have to stay in the WHL for another year unless he really impresses in camp and forces himself onto the team. I really wish he could just go to the AHL. Newhook will stay in the NCAA again (which isnt that much of a surprise, he was drafted out of the BCHL and likely needs an extra year to develop anyways).

-Avs would have a lot of expiring contracts after this season (Landeskog, Grubauer, Palmieri, Cole, Makar, Timmins, Calvert, Soderberg, Simmonds, Francouz, etc). They would let Cole, Calvert, Soderberg, and Simmonds leave as UFAs while re-signing Landeskog, Grubauer, Makar, Timmins, Francouz (if he has a good year), and they could offer a contract to Palmieri but may not have enough money to keep him. This departure of veteran players would allow our top prospects to come into the NHL in 21-22 when they are more ready. Byram would take Cole's spot on LD, Newhook, Bowers and Kaut would take Calvert, Soderberg and Simmonds spots, and we could fill in the rest as needed. Seattle would probably take someone like Compher or Zadorov, so we could also replace that player with Greer or Graves or another prospect

Sodes makes no sense, he's not an efficient skater and doesn't check enough to play 4th line. Bellmare is doing fine in the role right now, seems like wasting money on him and simmons. I also don't think it makes sense to bring in a player like palmeri when we're going to have to let one of our other players go unprotected. It would make more sense to go after someone after the expansion draft

SIgning Soderberg and Simmonds:
Soderberg and Simmonds may be a bit overpaid but who cares since we have enough cap space. 4th lines dont need to be made up of 3 checking forwards anymore, skill is taking over. I think Soderberg would be a good fit since Bednar is comfortable with him and everyone knows him already. He can play almost anywhere in the lineup to fill in for injuries too. After a long season and if the Avs go far in the post season its pretty much guaranteed that there will be injuries which would make room for Bellemare to step in. Its not a bad thing to spend extra cash to have more depth.

Trade for Palmieri:
We would already lose a good forward to seattle anyways. Assuming we protect 7/3/1 we have mackinnon, landeskog, kadri, and rantanen as locks, then we would lose one of: burakovsky, compher, donskoi, jost. I think All of those 4 players are pretty even in terms of value, but lets assume you rank them from 1-4. Assuming we dont bring in Palmieri then we would be able to protect 1, 2, and 3, while 4 would likely be taken by Seattle. With Palmieri we would be able to protect 1 and 2, while 3 would likely be taken by Seattle. The only difference is losing the player you ranked #3 vs the player you ranked #4 out of these players: Burakovsky, Compher, Donskoi, Jost. I dont think the difference between the 3rd best and 4th best on that list is very big, so its not really a problem to bring in a player like Palmieri. If we wait until after the expansion draft then we lose out on time in which we could be pushing for a cup. I would much rather load up now and get a longer cup window than not improve the team just to keep our current 7th best forward instead of our current 8th best forward
