Description
I was thinking about this the other day, and realized that perhaps there is bigger reason as to why most players make it through waivers instead of getting picked for free.

I wonder if it has more to do with the number of contracts teams currently have. Why I thought of this was because I saw a trade of Petan for Jurco a while back. My thought was, "I'd rather just take a pick and get rid of the contract".

I bet there are a lot of teams that are close to their max contracts and adding another one is hard if you can't get rid of one yourself.

So maybe that is what TO has to do, move Petan for another contract that a team doesn't really want.

Also teams don't want to make space on their NHL roster for a fringe player. Petan becomes more valuable to teams when he clears waivers as teams have more freedom to play him either in the bigs or AHL.

I agree, same with Sprong and Ho-Sang, but Petan also isn't as good as those guys, the most he'll get is another fringe AHL/NHL guy, or maybe if you're lucky a career AHLer and a 7th, and btw Badini doesn't have a contract so your example trade wouldn't work lol

If claimed a player has to stay on an NHL roster for 10 games/30 days. Then would have to clear waivers again to be sent down. Kind of ties the teams hands a bit. You really have to want the player to commit to it.

That and Petan sucks, he has no trade value. He’s a tweener, a guy with nothing to prove in the AHL and not enough game for the NHL beyond a roster filler. He’s the 14th FW on any team and every team has 4 or 5 guys that can fill that role.

He is going to have to decide if he wants to be a fringe player that bounces around and back and forth to the A or go to Europe.

Sure. The point I was making though is that perhaps a team like Edmonton or Arizona who need offence could want Petan but are also near their limit for contracts.

Petan played 3 games in the AHL and scored 7 points, he is too good for the AHL but needs to be in a top 6 role in the NHL to be successful, he isn't a 4th line grinder. That being said I don't think he's going to get a good return but I hope he gets a shot somewhere
