We dont have room for Stecher and Tanev.

In my eyes Tanev is a better fit for a few reasons. His chemistry and skill set along side Quinn complements him so well and allows him to play his game. He has great chemistry with the young players on this team, often hosting them for dinner and helping them with everyday life off the ice. He is a major factor on our PK unlilke Stecher who sees minimal minutes there.
Tanev could likely get a 4 or 5 year deal at 5+M with his on ice numbers but his injury history effects this. However, he has yet to miss a game this season and playing with Hughes has clearly helped this. My guess is his next contract is 5Mx3.

The emergence of Brogan Rafferty who has been leading AHL Defensemen in scoring and the reports of Tryamkins return to Vancouver also help make the case for Stechers departure. Benn and Nikita can also play the right side. Benn played his offside in Montreal last year and Tryamkin currently does so in the KHL.

I highly doubt Jim will trade any futures for a rental in 19/20. This season the Canucks will get a boost from just being healthy and adding Leivo and Ferland back to the lineup. But I could see them going down the rental route 2-3 years down the line.

Trading Stecher for a 2nd would soften the blow of not having a 1st. in saying that Miller has been well worth that pick, but we will need more young players to supplement our lineup a few years down the line.
