Tampa is cap-strapped and weak on the right side of their defense. They trade $5M at forward for $5.4M on defense - they will probably need to move out another $4.5M+ forward in this scenario. Ristolainen could be that right-shot puck mover Tampa seems to have been looking for. Tampa could provide a better fit for him with more offensive zone starts and less defensive burden. Thompson is a decent prospect, and is at the least a young cost-controlled forward. If he works out, he brings great size to Tampa’s top nine in their next wave of youth.
Buffalo has a lot going on the right side of their defense, so Sergachev can add balance as a young lefty. Johnson give Buffalo a veteran 2C to take pressure off of Mittlestadt and Cozens, and he can transition to wing it/when those two are ready to move into the 2C role.
I like the trade, but I don’t think Johnson will waive to come to Buffalo. Also I don’t think Botterill will trade Tage Thompson because he’s the last piece to the ROR trade that will be left.

Fair point about Johnson. Buffalo and Tampa are very different. Buffalo is a great hockey town though.
I’m not super plugged in to the Sabres, but I don’t know that a GM would be reluctant to move a player from a previous tough deal as long as his team is improving.
I’m going to do a Buffalo version of this shortly, and try to fill out the roster.

Colin Miller and Ryan Johnson are still in Buffalo

Buffalo would kill to make this trade, fills two holes and trade away surplus.
IMO Sergachev >= Ristoalainen (but maybe close), and right now Johnson > Thompson.
But maybe playing for a powerhouse team makes Johnson and Sergachev stats look much better.
What do I know, I am a couch hockey GM and a Sabre season ticket holder.
