Description
OTT gets 3 picks in the top 9. There's a link at the bottom of the description that's a bit dated...I wish it were more up to date, but it isn't. I bring that up because trades after 2013 are even more expensive to move up than this post is suggesting.

Pick #9 (38.5 points) Pick #18 and #33 (24 and 12.75...37) Shane Pinto would be worth more than 1.5, but again this data is dated. For example. AZ just last year traded #14 and #45 (29.8 +7.2 = 37) for #11 (~33) . 4 points is another 2nd rounder...Shane Pinto...

I wouldn't be upset if that's how things turned out. I'm just not a fan of drafting a goalie in the 1st round. There are A.) FAR too many goalie busts in the 1st and B.) If you look at the NHL today (I'm including tandem goalie systems) There are more 2nd rounder starting goalies in the NHL than 3rd rounder starting goalies...AND...there are more 3rd rounder starting goalies than 1st rounders. 2nd > 3rd > 1st. So starting goalies are VERY easily found in later rounds. ALL goalies just need time to develop. That really can't be said for centerman. Heck there are teams out there with 1st round centerman as their #3C! Ironically the Hawks have (3)...#3OA.

The last 1st round goalie busts were Jack Campbell and Mark Visentin in 2011. That being said, Campbell put up starter numbers for LA last year. They both played in the OHL their draft year which is not a men's league. Askarov has put up exceptional numbers in Russia's 2nd Best Men's League (VHL). I understand your concern but I'm failing to see your point.

It's too early to tell on Spencer Knight and I think he'll buck the trend to be perfectly honest, but here's the list of 1st round picks since Carey Price. There's only 1 goalie in that entire bunch that I'd say...yeah he's worth a 1st round pick.

Jake Oettinger, Ilya Samsanov, Malcom Subban, Vasi, Jack Campbell, Mark Visentin, Chet Pickard, Thomas McCollum, Riku Helenius, Leland Irving, Varlomov, Jonathan Bernier....I mean Bernie was pretty good last year on a terrible team, but still...probably not worth a 1st round pick.

BUT you're also ignoring the other part which I think is more important. Starting goalies can be found in ANY round. the last goalie to win the Vezina AND the Cup...Tim Thomas drafted in the 9th round. Starting goalies need time to develop and don't need to be drafted in the 1st round. The last 1st round pick to win a cup...08/09 PIT Penguins.
