Description
I believe the cap for 2020/21 will be set at the pre Covid prediction of 86m. But the reality of the 2019/20 shortened season makes the revenues of and a true cap of 70m. The owners and NHLPA will agree to base contract negotiations, arbitrations, qualifying offers, offer sheets on this 86m pre Covid projection. The NHLPA members the majority of who are mid to low paying players and who new contracts to be signed this year or in the next couple of years aren't going to allow the pre Covid contracts to keep all their money and the "new" players get scraps. As a result I think ALL salaries will be reduced 20% to get to from 86m pre Covid prediction, to the 70m revenue reality . Think 70m is too low, wait for the reality of the 2021/22 actual cap. May not play a 82 game season, arenas won't be full because of crowd fear and social distancing, recession causes lower ticket seasons and a reduction in other revenues like merchandise sales. The actual cap for 2021/22 could be 45m.
So I'll do a Leaf roster based on 86m cap, but the reality is all player take 20% pay cut. For the 2022/23, the negotiations cap is 90m but the revenue cap is 45m so all players take a 50%. cut. Let's pray for everyone that the Covid crisis doesn't affect ever day life years from now.

Return and team isn't that important. It's the needed cap space that is important to the Leafs...and a lot team will be doing the same.

I think there will be no season before players agree to take a 20% pay cut across the board.

The players union should be abolished if they allow that to happen.

It's following the rules of the cap...which is based on revenues. The majority of NHLPA members are low paid players with contracts due now or soon. They aren't falling on the sword because other players signed contracts on pre Covid revenue predictions.

Thinking that there will be an 86 million dollar cap is legitimately the worst take that’s happened through this pandemic, even with these weird stipulations.

There probably just won’t be a season next year.

I dont think theyll get that high for years. Flat cap in 20-21 then assess your rebound, If the early season is marred by scared fans and woeful attendance theirs no way theyre raising the cap by 5 mill the next season. I would argue for cap retraction in response, but the NHLPA would riot
