What if the 2nd is top 10 protected or so?

I mean:
Dermott has more or less the value of Zach
Subban has the value of at least -1 st round pick
And paying two 1st form Marner is not crazy.

Also, the main issue for New Jersey is to put up points. Marner would help a lot to do that.

The Devils don’t need to move Subban if he is viewed as a negative asset (which is fair, I’m not arguing that he has value). The Devils don’t have cap issues, don’t have any legit RHD (sans Severson), and IMO, I’m happy to give Subban another shot in year 2.

Look at your defense and tell me that this team isn’t a lottery team even with Marner. The Devils are in no position to be moving this much 2020 or 2021 1st/2nd round draft capital.

Maybe there is a team selecting in the top-10 that thinks they are closer to contending with Marner than their 2019 performance indicated - but I see the Leafs finding a better trading partner in the 10-15 region.

It doesn't help Toronto, either. They don't get significant cap room for the massive step down in on-ice talent.
