Description
Eriksson for Schneider straight up works: both have 2 years remaining therefore the buyout period is 4 years. Schneider’s buyout Cap Hit is $2M each for the next 4 years. Loui’s is $5.6M this year, $3.6M next and then just 666k the last 2 years. Vancouver needs the cap space now while NJD can afford to take a little on. NJD takes the heavy front but the backend of the buyout is minuscule. Vancouver takes the instant relief and swallows the $2M dead cap on the backend. I think both teams can agree to this.

Sutter with a 3rd and a mid level prospect should be enough to clear the contract.

Jay Beagle I believe is better than Nic Dowd but worse contract. So the 3rd is compensation for the extra $1.25M in cap Washington takes after Van retains $1M

Why would New Jersey do Vancouver this favor? Like you said, New Jersey can afford to swallow the inflated cap hit for the next two years, so why buy out Schneider/Erkisson at all? Just stash them in the AHL and get them off the books two years earlier.

I'm sure New Jersey would be open to a swap, but Vancouver would have to give up something in order to make it worth it for New Jersey to do it.

The incentive for NJD to take the deal is in actual money spent on the buyout not cap space. Schneider is owed $2M is real money and cap hit each year. Loui is only owed in 666k each year in real money with a declining cap hit. So it actually saves NJD $5,333,333 in actual money. I think that would be incentive enough for a straight swap and then both buy out. NJD might actual just keep Loui on the roster cause his actual owed money over the last 2 years now that Vancouver has paid this years bonus is $5M which is $7M less than Schneider who is owed $12M over the last 2 years. So it saves them In real cash that way too if they choose not to buy out Loui this year

NJD's incentive in taking Eriksson - their ONLY incentive in taking him - will be the asset that comes along with him. It would be high pick, prospect, etc. Otherwise, NJD has zero interest. They will keep their back-up goalie who is easy to bury or buy out....and stay very far away from Eriksson unless 1st picks or Hoglander, Podkolzin, etc are attached.

Sabres pass. They will not be taking any cap dumps.
