Description
-Trade away aging players for more picks prospects
-More playing time for younger players
-Acquire a young physical left wing to play in top six
-Acquire a young physical right handed defenseman with top 2 potential

I think for the Leafs young forwards they're going to have to have some quality defenseman that can move the puck, and as well rely on to counter their youthful mistakes. This defenseman should be right handed to balance out the D-core, and as well physicality would be a skill not currently present in the established roster nucleus. Because top young right handed defenseman are so hard to come by we're going to have limited options. I see 3 possible scenarios:

1. Jacob Trouba

Clearly something isn't meshing well with the Jets management as he is still without a contract, although he has had early success and is on the NA team in the WCOH, he did have a lackluster season last year. He brings some physicality and offensive skills.

2. Colton Parayko

Establishing himself as a premiere defenseman, he's climbed up the depth charts on a loaded STL Blues, behind Pietreangelo and Shattenkirk. It was thought Shattenkirk would be moved but theres rumours of him signing an extension, if that hold true there won't be much room for Parayko. A bulking 6'5" (or 6'6" according to some) with the potential to become a solid number 2 defenseman.

3. Jared Spurgeon

Although he doesn't get as much attention he's played on the top pairing with Ryan Suter for some time in Minnesota. And although he isn't a physical prescence like the other options he does play a simple and honest game, limiting chances and moving the puck well.

These three defenseman all could be targets. However I think Colton Parayko would be our best option going forward. If STL decides to resign Shattenkirk that would signify that they're going to make some more attempts at the cup. With Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk holding the defense core down it might be best for STL to move out Parayko and get some assets that will help bolster their attack

Going the other way will be quite the haul for the blues.

James Van Riemsdyk (50% retained)

JVR has been a top line winger for some time now, being on track for nearly 60 points last year on the worst team in the league. By retaining half his contract he instantly becomes an incredible bargain. His cost per point then joins the top 50 in the league, which is impressive given that most of those players are on entry level contracts. With JVR added to the mix it pushes their offensive core to one of the leagues best.

Kasperi Kapanen

Kapanen gives them a raw prospect to join their depleted prospect ranks. He'll take some more time to develop but the Blues aren't in a rush. This gives them some skill on the wings in their prospect group that they currently lack.

Matt Hunwick

Although he's not immensely valuable he will help with their playoff push. He slots in nicely as their 6/7th defenseman.

Other options:

Tyler Bozak

Another option is swapping Bozak in return for the overpaid Patrik Berglund, however I think the Blues would rather keep Berglund for 1 year and then get his contract off the books. I also thought about swapping Bozak for Lehtera as Blues fans often complain that Lehtera isn't worth his contract however I don't think they would prefer Bozak over Lehtera.

Roman Polak

Polak who played for the majority of his career with the Blues would bring some physicality lost from the departures of Backes and Brouwer. However his contract is more expensive than Hunwicks and he lacks mobility.

Nikita Soshnikov and Viktor Loov

I thought about adding these prospects for added depth for the STL Blues however they already have a decent depth supply and might not want the extra contracts.

On one hand i want to say that is an over payment for Parayko, but I also think STL would never trade him so maybe thats what it takes...

If this was our D going forward, i would be one happy fan, theres really no room for any prospects to come up...although most are 2 years away...

With regards to the forwards, why is Komarov on the 4th line? why is Brown playing RW? Nylander, Hyman, and Soshnikov have played way more LW than Brown...**Not to say i dont like Brown

Also i don't hate Leipsic, but i see Andreas Johnson becoming top 6 forward before him...

These are all little details tho, lines always change, All in all i like the trades and i like this team... people always forget, "Build your team from the net out"

If the shattenkirk trades partners don't pay up do they let him walk or sign him? I think it would be a great move to get parayko and would gladly overpay like noted above. He would be a great fit on this team and STL could benefit from maximizing a return for parayko vs what shattenkirk would fetch.

I have almost no doubt that STL will trade him to at least get something for him. They have time on their side right now so they're just going to wait until some GM's get antsy to improve their team. If all else fails, they'll trade Shattenkirk for cheaper then they hoped but will at least get something for him.

Trading Porayko now, for the Blues makes no sense. Trading Shattenkirk now makes a lot of sense. Young stud NHL players on ELC or who are still RFA are worth so much more to a team.
