Mostly cap reasons, Backlund would still be able to shelter Dach well without completely blocking him. Competitors usually just don't have 10.5M cap space to work with.

I would love it personally, he is just a pure upgrade on Backlund. I just don't think there is any way Chicago is retaining 3M and Lucic would almost have to be going the other way. Maybe it makes more sense in a year from now after the expansion draft

Hence the 3mil retention. Why would they retain 3 mil AND take on Calgary's cap dumps?
Not saying backlund is bad but a rebuilding hawks team has no use for his and rittichs cap hit unless it means the hawks getting a better return to do so.
