Notes:

-this idea would only become reality if some mix of matheson/POJ/riikola/Lee make Pettersson expendable.
-I think the Pettersson contact (while not bad) is kind of a bit much especially with the financial chaos covid has brought. I think his taking the one year previous at under 800K made this deal's AAV higher as GMJR and the pens "repaid" him for $$ lost.
-the pens have a whole lot of $$$ and bodies on LHD right now, but I think they will probably start the season like this and see how things pan out...

If Pettersson is "expendable" then why do the Rangers need or want him, especially at the cost of their 2nd best prospect outside the NHL? Penguins would need to add a 1st+take back a cap dump to make the Rangers even consider this.

fair point. maybe expendable isn't the best word to use. I just mean we have 3 LHD making over 4M and 2 cheaper options that can play probably this year on the left side... there's a log jam and from a distance it looks like NYR has a hole there.

That's not including Ryan Lindgren, who's a lock. Longer term, Zac Jones is looking like he'll have a legit chance to be a decent NHLer in a few years.

The cap is also a (significant) obstacle. They can't just add 4m in cap without sending some major cap back.

3rd Just because a player is deemed "expendable " by some fan, doesn't mean they have no value. McDonagh in TB is "expendable" not because he's a horrible defenseman, but because they don't really have room for a 6 million per 3LD and Headman is the number 1 and Sergy in the number 2 in that scenario.
So for the love of god, slow your homerism role.
