Description
Because TO already has too many contracts we need to send back the same number. Trade centres around JVR & Phaneuf, the last two can be any lower end prospect on a contract. Stoner is the contract coming back to help offset Phaneuf. Gibson becomes backup next year, takes over for Bernier in 2-3 years. Can still sign Cody Franson for RHD if another contract is moved out.

Can't understand why the Ducks would want Phanuef at 7m for 6 years. Can you? Why wouldn't the Ducks want to keep Gibson, (if he is soon to be a starter by your logic). Let's imagine this trade happens. Why bring back an overpaid Franson?

I personally do not know why anyone would want Phaneuf at that contract. But the fact of the matter is the GM that gave Phaneuf that contract is now with Anaheim. I think that adding both JVR and Phaneuf gives them a legit chance to win the cup next year. Anaheim has the cap space. And taking back 3 years of Stoner will help. As far as Gibson goes, he is better than any goalie prospect the leafs have, but seems to have health issues. Murray picked up Khudobin to be Anderson's backup for a reason. Also, both Anderson and Gibson are RFA's next summer. Anderson will be getting a huge pay raise (look what Braden Holtby is asking for). Gibson could be the odd man out. I think this is great trade for both teams, as Toronto gets potential future studs on LW, D and in goal, and the Ducks are in a better position to "win it all" now. Regarding Franson; with Phaneuf gone the leafs will have only Rielly and Gardiner to run a power play. Franson can easily be overpaid for one or two years to eat up minutes and be "the guy" until the younger guys are ready.
