Description
As the Avs gear up for the playoffs, and simultaneously battle the injury bug, I think there are three identifiable areas of need:
1. Backup Goaltender - With Pavel Francouz on LTIR, Hunter Miska has not been good enough as the temporary backup. Francouz is under contract through next season and could be back at some point this season, so this is a short-term problem.
2. Middle-Six Center - The third-line center spot was a weakness from the beginning of the season, and JT Compher is having maybe his worst pro season so far. The to his credit, his last couple games have been better, but he missed last night’s game with an injury.
3. Shut-Down Defenseman - They have managed to be one of the NHL’s top defensive teams, even with a laundry list of injuries on the blue line. With that being said, they will likely be without Erik Johnson for the rest of the season as he was placed on LTIR yesterday. They have plenty of talent on their current blue line, but I think they could use the stability they were expecting Johnson to bring. When he went out in the playoffs last season, it changed the dynamic of their young and inexperienced defense.

I’m curious what fans of these teams think a reasonable asking price would be for these players, either individually or in a package deal.

Columbus
Boone Jenner - I think Boone Jenner is exactly what Jared Bednar wants JT Compher to be; a rugged, versatile forward who can play in all situations. He has term, so would obviously cost more than a rental.
David Savard - Savard would be the direct replacement for Johnson. He’s a rental, but would still probably fetch a nice return if moved.

Detroit
Jonathan Bernier - A pending UFA goalie who would be an above average backup for Phillip Grubauer. He’s a player the Avs are already familiar with.
Vlad Namestnikov - Another former Av (briefly) who can play up and down a lineup. There were rumors that Sakic was after Namestnikov for a couple seasons before they made the deadline trade for him last season, so I’m sure he would be a welcome re-acquisition
Patrik Nemeth - a third former Av. He would not be a direct replacement for Johnson, but could provide some stability to the bottom of the lineup and would reinforce the PK.

Anaheim
Ryan Getzlaf - I think Getzlaf would be the perfect addition to the Avalanche, if he’s willing to leave Anaheim. He would likely step in as the 3C in a healthy lineup, and could easily move up in the case of injuries. As strong as MacKinnon is, they don’t have a center close to Getzlaf’s size.

Buffalo
Eric Staal - A similar story to Getzlaf; a big center that can play on the third line and up the lineup. Both Staal and Getzlaf are pending UFAs with some level of no-trade protection. Anaheim would likely have to retain on Getzlaf in a trade, while Buffalo probably would not.

In terms of a return, I would imagine anyone from Colorado’s top six forwards, top four defensemen, Phillip Grubauer, and Alex Newhook are off the table. They have a pretty good pool of B and C level prospects right now, and are a little short on draft capital.

Why would they need a shut down defenseman when they already have the best dcorp in the league and have gone like 13 games in a row allowing less than 30 shots.

Back up goalie absolutely, literally anybody that is even just an NHL caliber goalie so you aren’t giving away points when Grubauer isn’t playing and working him to death with the condensed scheduled. Bernier probably tops that list, but ffs the Zamboni driver would be an upgrade over Miska. I would think A 3rd and prospect like Beaucage or Mutula might get it done.

3C definitely like Staal BUF might be willing to do Compher straight up, maybe NSH would take a 3rd for Haula.

COL will have to be creative with what they use to trade away since they don’t have second rd picks.

Getzlaf has evidently said he would block any trade, and for a guy who already has a ring and 4 kids I believe it.

Like the description says, adding a defenseman would be about adding stability. They have a very talented group already, and they are statistically one of the best defensive teams in the NHL. I think the forward group deserves some credit for that as well. Even if they’re lacking scoring in the bottom six, they have some very solid two-way forwards throughout the lineup.
Also keep in mind how young their core group of defensemen are. It’s one thing to dominate regular season games on talent, but a playoff series is a different story. They got exposed by Dallas last playoff. I think Devon Toews brings more consistency, and Girard and Makar have both progressed over the last year. But it still may be worth while to look at adding another D. Again, not the most pressing need, but you can never have too many good NHL defensemen.

Regarding Getzlaf, I would be surprised if he’s traded. But if he did want to take a run at another cup, Colorado would make sense. He would stay relatively close to home, and it’s a team he will be familiar with by seasons end.
