The guy they signed at the end of free agency when no one wanted him turns into a 2nd round pick and a trade chip they have to use before the expansion draft. Okay.

eta: obviously none of the three teams in this conversation would protect Vanecek, but Edmonton could, San Jose could, Buffalo could if they keep Ullmark UFA past expansion, Detroit probably could? It might be simpler to just say Jensen and a 3rd, and have LA end up with a 2nd and a 3rd, sure, but I'm building off someone else's post.

AA is a RFA at the end of the season. The Kings will re-sign him. He has been very good for them so far this year.

The rebuild is just about over, a 2nd round pick doesn't do much for them, as it won't be a NHL ready asset for another 4-5 years.

Nothing LA gets in this trade would provide incentive for the Kings to trade AA instead of keeping him.
