Description
So Nick Leddy had a "resurgent" season in 2021, scoring 31 points in the 56 game season and helping to keep the Islanders' fledgling power play afloat, for at least the first part of the season. However, he's been pretty quiet in the playoffs, makes a lot of money and has rather poor defensive analytics. For these reasons (number 2, in particular), I think he's a guy the Isles should really look to move on from this offseason.

With the trade for Ryan Graves (which would happen before expansion), Leddy would be left exposed to the Kraken, giving them a pathway to acquiring a potential 0.5 point per game defenseman for their first season. The biggest issue with this, is that Nick Leddy is owed $7 million in 21-22, which is more than almost any team in the league would want to have to pay for him next season, even if he does replicate his success from this past season.

The little blurb in the trade with Seattle explains the transaction. As for the amount being retained, it would have the Islanders pay $2 million of the $7 million Leddy is owed next season. It's a lot of money, but I'm highly skeptical that anyone would take his full deal. This way, the Isles shed a boatload of real money and cap space to make other moves.

Of course, this scenario can really only take place if Seattle really likes Nick Leddy. With the acquisition of Graves, Scott Mayfield is left exposed, who could also make an attractive expansion piece. So this is just one scenario. Is it likely? Do both teams benefit? Let me know what you think...

Maybe if you retain like that. If I were them I'd prob want Bellows, but Leddy at a discount would be good to have in the room before flipping at the TDL.

Isles would save more by buying him out, I think they'd take leddy w/o retention if they think they can flip him for more at the deadline. Maybe add Aho instead of czarnik.

Superb AGM and I hope people read the description

As someone who hugely supports them keeping Bellows & Aho (swedish Nick Leddy in future) I really like this strategy and reckon Seattle may take it

Though with Bellows being a rare chance at acquiring a high upside player early on it might not be enough, seems not much of that will be available ultimately

unfortunately Trotz doesn't like Bellows - he needs to go to a team that will put him in a position to succeed and not change his game too much.

I feel like NYI really need to take advantage of Seattle having cap space and being in the expansion grace period for a few years and try to get them to take

    Bailey or if possible JGP

Rare opportunity to get out of those quagmires and get flexibility for once in ages, maybe NJ can take Leddy given his UFA lining up with their big RFA deals
