Make a team of guys selected with the pick after your team selected, Flames edition.
2011 was just a series of Ls in the first 2 rounds lol, Baertschi over Oleksiak, Markus Granlund over Edmundson, and then Tyler Wotherspoon over Kucherov (who we supposedly had pegged as a potential steal, but didn’t decide to use pick 57 on). Luckily we still got Gaudreau in the 4th but man would it have been nice to have Kucherov as well. 2013 first round was pretty mediocre as well, Monahan was a good pick at 6, but at 22 and 28 we whiffed, Burakovsky and Dickinson went next and are NHL players while the 2 guys we drafted have never been heard from again. Other than this, the drafting’s actually been pretty solid. It’s usually the Flames finding a late round steal like Mangiapane, Kylington, Andersson, Fox, Brodie, Ferland, or Dube. This roster is pretty mediocre because the Flames haven’t had their 1st for a couple years and teams behind them whiffed (MDC at 5 is a big yikes, Bennett at 4 wasn’t great but it was certainly better than MDC at 5, Virtanen at 6, or Haydn Fleury at 7). The Flames definitely whiffed on their fair share of 1sts the further back you go though, didn’t have a good one between Backlund (2007) and Monahan (2013). I went back to like 2006. Going back a little further you get like, Stalock, Halak, Andrei Kostitsyn, Sekera, and Brouwer, but like half those guys are retired or mediocre these days, Halak’s the only one that might make this team, so I figured 06 was a good place to stop. D is pretty solid, C could use some work. 3rd line looks pretty solid tbh, very physical, probably a good energy line in the playoffs. Overall the Flames didn’t really get burnt too often, they definitely hit on more than they missed if you look at the next pick.
