Description
Vancouver’s top 9 is legitimately enviable now. The top line was always great and Horvat is a good 2C, but picking up a 3C in Dickinson, adding Podkolzin to the mix, and picking up Garland (very underrated, very good at doing the whole goal scoring thing) in the Arizona trade for the 2nd line will do wonders. Hoglander and Garland give Horvat two talented wingers, and because the 3rd line is actually NHL quality now (Pearson getting bumped down to play at 3LW is a good sign of the increased depth), they can start taking some more difficult matchups, leaving the Horvat line open to provide more secondary scoring. Very good mix of youth, smill, and 2-way guys, with a couple stabilizing veterans thrown in there.

One of Holtby or Schmidt needs to be moved for money reasons. I think it’ll be Schmidt, but I couldn’t be bothered to try and find another 2RD (lots of people just go Savard, but I think he’s going to Montreal, maybe Ottawa). They probably bring in another vet for the 3rd pair that actually shoots right, rather than running two young lefties in Rathbone and Juolevi. Ceci seems like a very Benning guy lol, although they could save a little money if they like Bowey at 3RD.

It's a nice top 9, but wait Seattle OS Pettersson at 8.25 and now your out of cap space

the top 9 does look pretty good, i think re-signing Sutter at league min (if possible) would really help the 4th line and the PK
the defense is still suspect though, i feel like we really need like an Ekblad or Parayko or high caliber defensive guy to play with Hughes as the go to top 2, and to backstop the PK.

Yeah the RD is garbage. I don’t hate OEL on the 2nd pair (at least for a couple more years) but Myers is just not good. Schmidt is okay, but it sounds like he’s unhappy there. If the right side of the top 4 was a couple of shutdown guys (Larsson, Cernak, Savard, Parayko, etc. type of guys) I’d consider them a fringe contender with the caveat that Demko has to be above average.

I kinda doubt Francis is gonna come into the league with a brand new team and immediately start throwing out offer sheets. It would definitely be a juicy story though. If he spends to the cap in free agency he could make Seattle good now, if they add like Schwartz, Petey via OS, and Danault or something they could be a threat right out of the gate. They have an excellent D corps and solid goalies, just gotta solidify the LW and up the middle.

Parayko would be perfect -- and I've heard rumors over the past couple of years, but who knows if those hold any water... Cernak is interesting too.
