Description
Caps have already said they want to resign Oshie. This likely puts Alzner out of their price range. If they do end up trading Orpik as a cap dump somewhere, they will have space to resign Karl but considering the market, they will be much better off going after a guy like Kris Russell. Russell and Alzner are very similar players but Russell will cost much less. This way, they have some room against the cap to make a deadline deal and eventually give Carlson a big raise next offseason.

Also, assuming Grubi gets taken in the expansion draft (he can be a starter in the NHL and you can be sure McPhee is aware of that), not sure if the Caps promote Vanecek (who has been decent for Hershey this season) or go after a one year veteran backup like Condon/Nilsson/Kinkaid. Ilya Samsonov has been a stud in the KHL and has already stated his desire to come play in America once his contract is up in 2018. Leaguewide, the goaltending market is almost impossible to predict this offseason as teams are going to be stuck either shuffling goalies around like crazy on June 19 or risk VGK snapping them up for free.

      Additional Details:
If Kenny Holland somehow dumped 7.5 million of no Pavel Datsyuk on the Yotes and only had to move back 4 slots in the 1st round to do it (as well as picking up a second rounder), then the Caps should be able to dump Orpik (who is still a solid player, just well overpriced) while moving back 4 rounds and picking up a replacement for Bowey down in Hershey in return.

Drop wood out the deal and make it a first round pick and a third round pick and you'll be fine. Az also sent real money back in the deal for dats and we got the best defenseman in the draft for a cap hit. Not a bad deal.

It's not like Chychrun was supposed to go at 16. For my money, I thought Edmonton should've taken him (but that was before Columbus took Dubois instead of Puljujarvi). I see your logic, but it still doesn't make sense. The Red Wings basically traded a top defense prospect for a decent defense prospect, because that's all Cholowski is.

I get that you have to look at the AZ/DET trade with the understanding that Chayka was moving up to get 'his guy' in Chychrun. That being said, the Yotes were acquiring 7.5 million of nothing. In Orpik, they would be paying him 11 million over 2 years to be a contributor. Granted, they have lots of defensemen, and guys like Goligoski and Schenn can be those mentors to the young guys without Orpik. Just figured that for the next two years, AZ is the best equipped team to take on Orpik's salary and therefore the best trade partner for the Caps
