The depth is better but the return for marner has to be more than that

So you lose marner and replace him with a guy who will get suspended in the playoffs, Domi who's basically worthless these days and a nearly 40 year old Pavelski. All of which comes in at a higher cap hit than Marner who you essentially gave away for pennies on the dollar. This is a much worse team
