I don’t think the Wings are ready to make a move this big, especially for Malkin, who likely won’t be enough to get over the hump at this point in his career. He may not even waive his NMC for a non-contender like Detroit.

Yzerman has always preached patience, and this treads all over that motto.

Do you find it odd that a 35 year old Malkin rental returns comparable value to a locked up Eichel?

Detroit won't, that's a bit much even for a player like Malkin. That package is pretty similar to what Eichel got traded for.

That said I do hope that at the time, if they penguins aren't in the playoff race, that they trade Malkin and Letang to teams contending and try and recoup some young talent.

Not something the Wings should be looking at doing, they're not in the position to be trading 1sts away, Malkin likely stays in Pittsburgh anyway.
