Description
I'm fully aware I'll take flak for this, but I want to try a different trade idea.

I'd say Fiala's value is at around 1st and a 2nd. Marat K is around a late 1st. Hertl is worth two 1st and Barabanov is at around two 2nds. Minnesota moves Fiala for a cheaper replacement and a 1C. Hertl and Barabanov work well together and could both be resigned; Hertl at round 7.5~8mil for 6-7 years, while Barabanov could look to take a shorter deal at around 3mil for 3 years. They could be played with Kaprizov and give them a scary top line with a 1-2 punch of Hertl and JEK. Sharks get a younger winger to play with Meier and form a Swiss duo of sorts. They also bring in another highly rated C prospect that fills an organizational need. I put Scott Reedy between the two Swiss wingers because he's shown he has a scoring touch in the AHL and given the chance to play between two talented wingers, he has every reason to flourish.

I think you've overpriced Hertl here, but I don't hate the general idea. In fact, I almost wonder if Hertl for Fiala 1-for would work. Value balances out thanks to RFA vs UFA status and whatnot, plus Fiala is a major bounce back candidate.

Sharks don’t consider Hertl for fiala 1 for 1

I actually think you'd come out on top of that trade in the long run. Besides he is a UFA rental, you aren't getting nearly as much value as you want

Although I see where you’re coming from, I don’t think Fiala is worth the same value as Hertl. Hertl is far more skilled and drives play way more. He plays a position that’s valued much more and can be much more versatile, be it taking faceoffs or playing a 200ft game.

Edit: Also a trade like this would give Minnesota the space to resign Hertl.

Short term, absolutely correct. Hertl is better and Fiala is in a rut. If they were both under control for (say) 3 years there is no way in hell. The problem is that MIN is getting 3 months from Hertl, vs the full control and expected bounce back of Fiala. That value skews in your direction big time long term, and that is with my 1-for trade, let alone yours.

And if he doesn't want to stay? Trading a guy without control, even if they could theoretically extend their control over him doesn't garner additional value. Moreover you seem to not fully understand the predicament the Wild are in cap wise. Due to adding $8M onto the cap next year from the buyouts they can't even afford Fiala as is, so no this move does not give them the space to extend Hertl's contract at $8M ish aav
