Description
I'm not an Oilers fan so don't rip me apart for this.

So imo I don't think the Oilers should trade their 1st round pick for a rental as I think it's poor asset management but since the constant refrain is that if their goaltending isn't improved nothing will change and other changes wouldn't make enough difference so in this proposal I'm sending their 1st round pick for probably the best goalie who might be available in Fleury. Also maybe the Oilers can find a way to sign MAF to a one or two year deal as a bridge to Skinner becoming the Oilers #1 goalie, yes I know Smith is signed for another year but he's injury prone at this point so who knows what his future is, if he's healthy Skinner starts in Bakersfield as he's still waivers exempt and is called up if an injury happens or Smith falters. Hawks take an expiring Koskinen to balance the cap for Edmonton and also send a retained
Da Haan, the Oilers 1st would be top 5 protected. I know the Oilers cap situation is tight again next offseason so signing MAF would be tough but maybe they can dump or buyout some guys and something could be worked out, just a hypothetical so let's not get too bogged down on that.

The Seattle and Arizona trade are to improve the bottom six depth, Appleton is an RFA and shouldn't cost a lot to extend so should be decent cheap depth for a few years.

I had to demote some veterans to the AHL to create some cap space, unfortunate but it is what it is, none of those guys are really doing anything and won't be surprised if Kassian is bought out in the summer.

Since this is all hypothetical let's assume Fleury will waive for Edmonton and Chicago isn't on Koskinen's no trade list.

So are these fair trades? Do the Oilers need to add to any of them? Let me know in the comments below, thanks!

Think if the Oilers do deal their first in that trade, they'd want Fleury's cap hit retained, not deHaan's, thus leaving them with a bit more cap space to deal with for other trades.. The Seattle deal, although looks alright on paper, is kind of useless for Edmonton, they need a legit top 6 winger who would be an upgrade over Yamamoto, and/or a 3rd line C(even though I think McLeod deserves the ice time and chance to play as that need).. The other "need" if you will for Edmonton would be a bottom pairing left shot D man, somebody better than Koekkoek/Russell/Lagesson(even tho I think Lagesson is the best option of the 3 he doesn't get a legit shot for whatever reason).. I agree with the Fleury assessment too, maybe he can sign a 1/2 year deal with Edmonton, Smith likely gets injured, and it gives them a viable option and incredible mentor for a young Skinner to look up too, if that happens, the Oilers currently have just over $5.3mish in space, if the cap goes up by $1m that makes it just over $6m, plus Klefbom doesn't look like he will be returning adds another $4.167, basically leaving them with $10.4m to bring Fleur back and round out the bottom 6 forward group again...

In the Hawks trade they're taking Koskinen that's why there's no retention plus if they retain 50% on top of taking Koskinen then what's that going to cost, will they want another asset to take Koskinen??

I watched Appleton for years and he might be able to slot in the 2nd line and not look totally out of place so that's why I acquired him, might be able to get him for less then a 2nd so that could be adjusted. I grabbed Dzingle cause he too has played higher up in lineups before so could maybe be tried on the 2nd line, was just looking for guys to allow for some experimentation with lines to find something that might work and if not the bottom six at least got better.

I acquired Da Haan to put on the 2nd pair so to drop Keith down to the 3rd pair, Da Haan is a defense first type dman which Edmonton could really use.

I just don't know how many more assets the Oilers could blow to try to get better right now, who's a top 6 winger they could acquire? Really think they need to improve their bottom six more then their top 6.

The Hawks are taking Koskinen so that's why there's no retention, not sure they'd take Koskinen and retain.

I think they will because Mikko's deal is up this year.
