Description
Burns' value is a bit wacky to me IMO. He has been putting up the points and has been mildly consistent, but with the contract and age, it's a bit funky. Sharks would move him most likely during the off season (due to a need to move out some cap, make room for younger defenseman, and show that we are gonna be moving with Karlsson and Merkley as our top 4 RHS RD. Also, with a theoretical Hertl trade involving a young RHS RD being brought in, there is not need for Burns). I also believe they could only move Burns with 50% retained, all trades will reflect this personal belief. I understand others are gonna disagree with these takes, but like the title says, this is more to start a discussion.

With all that, here's a few of my takes on a Burns trade:

  2. Lundkvist, Nils

    3. 2024 3rd round pick (PIT)
    PIT
      Burns 50% (4,000,000)

With 3 years left on Burns’ contract, he would be there for the latter years of Pittsburgh’s cup window and would be a UFA most likely when they finally decide to wrap things up. This trade would only occur in the event of a Kris Letang departure.
      3.
      SJS
      1. Dellandrea, Ty
      2. 2023 2nd round pick (DAL)
      3. 2024 3rd round pick (DAL)
      DAL
        Burns 50% (4,000,000)

If Dallas resigns Pavelski, I could see them bringing in the dman who was responsible for all those shots he tipped on.

Burns also has a ranch in Texas so would be a very appealing destination for him.
        4.
        SJS
        1. Bolduc, Samuel
        2. 2023 2nd round pick (NYI)
        3. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
        NYI
          Burns 50% (4,000,000)

Isles were rumored to be looking for a puck moving defenseman. The defensive focused hockey would suit Burns' weakness and with a strong confidence in his team defensive coverage, Burns could be a bit more of his older self where he wasn't relied upon to actually defend much.

I'm not sure he would waive though, so that's a bit iffy.
          5.
          SJS
          1. 2023 1st round pick (TBL)
          2. 2023 5th round pick (TBL)
          TBL
            Burns 50% (4,000,000) + 2nd 50% (2,000,000)

This is gonna be a hot take, but with a second team retaining; Tampa could get a 60 point scoring defenseman for only 2 mil for 3 years. At only 2 mil they could off load him as well if he drops off. It's a Tampa type move and he could be a smart addition for relatively cheap.

As you said, if Letang decided to leave? I'd make this trade in a second.

Isles are not interested in Burns, they need to get younger and RD is already a strength.

Dallas has too many overpriced veterans on the books right now. Even if value is fair, it doesn't make sense for one of the oldest teams in the league to get even older when their 1st offseason priority should be to get younger.

Couple things here. I feel like his value is pretty much, “can we get him off the books.”

The other part here is he has a very protective NTC, and doesn’t seem eager to waive it.

Tampa can't afford Burns @ $4,000,000 long term, Pretty sure Tampa can use their money more wisely elsewhere.
