I have said this today in another thread :
It would be pretty stupid to trade Connor Brown for anything else than in a package for an impact player.
Trading him for futures = continuing the rebuild (when it's already getting long in the tooth)
Trading him for a much lesser player and less futures = EVEN WORSE
Connor Brown needs to be extended. Hopefully 5 years is possible though
Trading Brown for futures is totally counter productive, it just kicks the rebuild can further down the road. Keep in mind Batherson has 5 years left on his contract. Chabot and Tkachuk 6 years left. Sens need to start making the playoffs ASAP. One thing that would tremendously help would be to add Giroux AND extend Connor Brown. He's an excellent skater, he usually doesn't miss games and his non-stop motor and flawless work ethic means he still has several good years left. He's a keeper.
Teams are not stupid, they are ready to snatch Brown as soon as he is available. Avs just gave a good prospect and a 2nd for Artturi Lehkonen, who is a similar player to Brown but way less productive (30-40 pts vs 50-60 pts). Sens could definitely get a pretty good return in terms of futures for Brown, it's just that people in general don't know/realize how good he is.
I understand what you are trying to do here and it's still possible that the Sens would make the playoffs but being a buyer at the deadline will depend on so many things
- Slafkovsky needs to be a good top-6 LW right away
- Giroux signs in Ottawa and doesn't take any step back
- Nick Paul accepts to come back at that amount after being totally freed.
And all the usual factors (health, coaching, goaltending, chemistry, young guys progressing, etc)
Keeping Brown on top of all that would just help the team a lot more than another 1st and prospect. We should be over done with the rebuild. You'd be scrambling at the deadline to get a player as good as Brown for a 1st round pick and a prospect like Dellandrea
Edit : as sensonfire often mentioned, Ottawa should not/will not trade assets to dump a contract, they have a lot of cap space

Switch Stankoven with Dellandrea and you could have a deal. With how it is, the Stars decline.
Pass, see why above

Quick decline out of Dallas. I don't hate Brown, but a 1st and a top prospect is a quick rejection from most teams in the league
You'd be surprised. Brown produces near 60 pts pace mostly at ES+PK while being deployed defensively against other teams best lines and best defensive pairings. He's near a Selke level winger.
Just look at the recent returns for Rakell, Copp, Lehkonen, Hagel, Järnkrok, Toffoli... Brown is better than all of them, except Toffoli
