I have good friend named Sir Charles. Don't think Avs have trouble reaching the floor, they are just bad. Watching Dermott, the Leafs might consider him a much better long term player than Barrie....and certainly cheaper in the next few years. I see what you have done the in the trade....the classic veteran, you know what you got for potential. Leafs may not be that impressed with the current ceiling of Barrie.,

Barrie is a right handed shot that is already a top 3/4 Dman. He is still just 25 (26 before next season starts) and can play at both ends of the ice.
The leafs already have their top 2 left handed Dmen in Reilly and Gardiner and Andrew Neilson is coming up probably within the next 2 years. Makes Dermott expendable.
They have loads of forward prospects that won't even get a look at breaking the NHL roster in the next couple years so it only makes sense to use those to get that right handed Dman they need. I personally would rather Trouba but Barrie is available and a bit cheaper I would think.
Also Colorado is trying to move soderberg, Duchene, Landeskog and Barrie which will put them at the cap floor.
I'm totally on board with the rebuild but sometimes if you haven't got it, you need to go get it.
