Trades
1.
OTT
MTL
  1. White, Colin
Additional Details:
Seems like there's been some interest in White, so let's say he moves. Doubt Ottawa will take bad money back or give assets to move him, as they can easily buy White out instead if the return hurts more than it helps.
2.
OTT
ARI
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Sens need to move Zaitsev, but unlike White, I don't think they can get away from his deal without a sweetner.
3.
OTT
  1. 2022 1st round pick (PIT)
PIT
  1. Brown, Connor ($1,800,000 retained)
Additional Details:
For the record I don't want to move Connor Brown. That said, if there's a scenario where Ottawa can bring in Giroux AND Fiala, Suddenly you're looking at a different future outlook where it's not gonna be practical to keep Brown on an extension. Brown is too valuable to lose for nothing. At 1.8mil for next season he's worth a 1st to a contender imo. Just picked one out of a hat.
4.
OTT
  1. Fiala, Kevin [RFA Rights]
MIN
  1. Bernard-Docker, Jacob
  2. 2022 1st round pick (PIT)
  3. 2022 3rd round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Flip the Brown return to bring in Kevin Fiala who is younger and a much more dynamic offensive talent.
5.
OTT
MIN
  1. Watson, Austin ($750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Seems like a good locker room presence, but he's limited on ice and mid as a fighter. If Ottawa really wants that type of player, Nic Deslauriers would be a totally reasonable use of some UFA money (within reason).

Again, not opposed to keeping him, but replacing him with Deslauriers would be preferable.

Yeah the Watson trade is only Minny because I'd just made the Fiala deal. Could be any team. Someone will look for his type of service at league min. In this scenario though, Deslauriers signs in Ottawa (not that I really think that happens).

As for the Fiala deal itself, could be Jarventie instead.

Am I the only one nervous about offering Fiala $7 million plus long-term?

Not especially. He's really goddamn talented. Been a 25G, 60P pace guy the last 4 years, and the underlying numbers suggest he's an incredibly strong driver of offensive play. He's only 25, so he's definitely still in the range where he lines up as a long term piece for Ottawa's competitive window.

Tim Stützle needs dynamic offensive skill on his line to help cultivate and develop his offensive skills and instincts. He's benefited a lot from having Nick Paul and Connor Brown on his wings so much in his first year at C, it's clearly made a huge impact in his growth in his defensive game this season. Going forward though, he needs to play with someone skilled and smart enough to get Timmy really cooking offensively. Tim Stützle is gonna be the lynch pin of this team's forward group if they're ever going to become true contenders and he's gonna need to be playing with top line skill to get there.

Honestly this would be fantastic. Joseph breaking out definitely makes C. Brown expendable if Giroux does end up signing here (hopefully his breakout is legit and not like Gaudette’s lol, although he’s still useful defensively even if the offense dries up) and that 3rd line should be fun to watch next year, and eventually develop into a solid 2-way line capable of providing some secondary scoring while being defensively responsible.

Who is your preferred choice at the draft? Assuming we don’t win the lottery, I’ve been on the Slafkovsky train for a long time, but if we draft him that puts 5 lefties in our long term top 6 (at least Fiala can play RW). If we draft Savoie or Kemell though, then Stutzle is the biggest player on our long term 2nd line lol. Unless we shuffle a bit and run Tkachuk-Norris-Savoie/Kemell // Fiala-Stutzle-Batherson.

I would also rather use Jarventie than JBD in the Fiala deal.
