Description
Detroit seems like a great fit for Monahan for a number of reasons, but I genuinely have no idea what a deal would look like for him. Does a couple late round picks get it done if Detroit eats his entire contract? (which is something they could easily afford to do). Or does Calgary want a prospect of some kind in exchange?

Calgary would take late picks / future considerations for sure.

Monahan (1.5M retained) + 4th for future considerations.

Calgary is going to really need that cap space and is entertaining a buyout, so I think you could get up to a 2nd (no retention). The guy was playing on the 4th line, and Calgary needs 20+M to sign just two players.

Given that Monahan played as a 4c this year, will be coming off a surgery for a bad injury, made gaudreau and tkachuk look bad, and that calgary desperately needs cap to resign their stars, I would not pay anything to take Monahan and would be looking for at least a second in return for the cap relief

All good suggestions so far. Monahan just seems like a hard guy to value right now, but I know Calgary desperately needs the cap space. That is if they don't send him to Robidas Island

Don't forget about what Fabbri and Vrana became after an Yzerman move. This would be a good deal for Detroit if they moved a 5th, 6th or 7th just for Monahan nothing retained. The risk vs reward for Detroit to "pay" for Monahan isnt so bad. The likely hood of a 5th, 6th, 7th round pick making it in the NHL is not very good. Calgary being in a spot that requires them to move his contract works for Detroit to gain more from Calgary. Id look for Calgary to maybe send back a 4th or 5th with Monahan, Detroit gives them future considerations... That would be a win. Overall though, like I said, worst case I would be ok with Yzerman giving up a 6th straight up. Its a one year deal, we have the room, experiment on this one.. say "but what if"... nothing to really lose
