Description
As always, I try to think of the worst case/moderately favorable scenarios for trades/signings (the exception is the DeBrincat trade, I'm sure Chi fans wouldn't like the return but there's not set price on him). Any potential savings on signings would just be used for cap flexibility. Assuming that Smith does not retire this offseason.

2023-24 Cap changes:

Out - Kassian 3.2, Foegele 2.75, Barrie 4.5, Keith ~5.5, Smith 2.2, 2.25m Dead Cap = 20.4m
In - Debrincat 8.5, Strome 4.5, Lybushkin 2, Gagner 0.9, Comrie 2 = 17.9m

Net change: -2.5m

Goaltending plan:
The plan is to exercise patience, and see if Skinner and/or Comrie can have a breakout season. Smith will perhaps remain on the roster as a 3rd goalie, if he's not injured.

Perhaps Hellebuyck becomes available sometime in the following year, or in free agency 2 years at age 31. Carter Hart would also be up for an extension as an RFA.

Trades
1.
EDM
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (DAL)
DAL
  1. Barrie, Tyson
Additional Details:
Trade based off this link. If Dallas doesn't retain Klingberg perhaps they could use Barrie.

If not then any team interested.

2.
EDM
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
44th OV
CBJ
  1. Kassian, Zack
  2. 2022 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Saw somewhere that CBJ might be interested in Kassian. The make up of the suggested trade is from the link below.

https://oilersnation.com/2022/06/23/how-the-edmonton-oilers-could-explore-a-tyson-barrie-or-zack-kassian-trade/
3.
EDM
  1. DeBrincat, Alex
  2. Strome, Dylan [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Ask on DeBrincat is apparently a high pick/picks and young players.
https://www.bleachernation.com/blackhawks/2022/06/28/what-were-hearing-about-the-alex-debrincat-trade-market/

Davidson grants Holland permission to negotiate new contracts with the two before a trade is finalized

DeBrincat extension 8.5x8 (He has 8th most goals in the NHL since joining the NHL 5 years ago, so he could get a lot more but I have him taking the Draisaitl contract despite AB12 having better stats than LD29, when the latter signed)

Strome gets signed for 4.5m x5 (similar AAV to Sam Bennett contract and Ryan Strome's expiring contract, more term since he's bound to get a large payday playing on the Erie Otters line)
CHI
  1. Foegele, Warren
  2. Petrov, Matvei
  3. Puljujärvi, Jesse [RFA Rights]
  4. Yamamoto, Kailer [RFA Rights]
  5. 2023 1st round pick (EDM)
  6. 2023 2nd round pick (DAL)
  7. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
  8. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
YM, JP, 2023 1st, 2024 1st, 2023 2nd (Dal), 2023 2nd (Edm) for DeBrincat

Petrov for Strome's rights since he's probably not getting qualified (he seems to have a similar skill set as DeBrincat
https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/527464/matvei-petrov)
Foegele is a throw in for cap reasons mostly

Based off a mock trade on here that had DeBrincat go for Holloway+Puljujarvi+Foegele+ 2023 1st and 2nd

With the addition of Strome, the Oilers would have a challenge with signing Yamamoto and/or Puljujarvi. So instead of Holloway, I added Yamamoto+2024 1st+ second 2023 2nd.

Quantity over quality might be the unravelling of this trade, however, the 2023 1st rounder would only be top 3 protected while the 2024 1st round unprotected)

Team looks pretty stacked but man that goaltending is so iffy. It's like the most meh tandem in last 10 years.

Yeah, but with Holland not seeming too keen on making a trade for one, I figured the only option would be Husso with the cap available (if Smith doesn't retire), and I'm guessing he goes to another team. I think the Oilers would be able to land Campbell if they had the cap (in this scenario but with Smith retiring) but unless he's coming in closer to 4m with term, might be tight for the next couple of years depending on Bouchard and Skinner extensions.

So, if they were to stack the forwards, I wouldn't be surprised for them to get potentially mediocre goaltending.

I think he will address the issue if Smith retires. I mean he can't afford not to, since he perceives EDM to be a contender and they can't contend without a goalie.

If he can't land a goalie from free agency, he'll trade for one. It's probably not going to be the greatest guy in the market, but a serviceable tandem guy with Skinner. Vanecek or Driedger are first that come to mind (although the massive injury the latter sustained in the world championships will keep him out for a while)

Yeah, it all comes down to Smith retiring.

Yeah, a break out candidate like Vanecek (I think some expect Comrie to be one too so I just picked him as a local kid) or someone who has shown that they can be a starter in a short amount of time that costs ~3.5m like Driedger (perhaps Husso but I feel like the Oilers won't be front runners).

It's probably the safer bet too, just in case Skinner does break out, if they can get him at a bridge deal in the 3s, they would have 6-7m in goaltending which might be a bit much for this team, but that beats 8m+ if they were to sign a guy for 5m x 5.
