Description
Generally based signings off Dobber Hockey salary projections

If Sandin is the one who is going to, I suspect they might try to target Chychrun if the ask doesn't remain too high.

The Muzzin trade is the less than ideal move that Dubas typically makes and the Domi signing also has that potential. I don't think it's because Dubas is a bad GM, it's more so that he probably doesn't get too many reasonable trade partners because no one wants to "help" him but perhaps people GMs don't want to get embarrassed by someone of his age and background if the deal starts to look lopsided in his favor down the road.

If the Leafs dump Muzzin in a hockey deal then they likely secure Husso.

Fleury probably lands elsewhere but along with Murray and the other new additions, the names are just placeholders (can be Husso and Blackwood). The cap allocation is the main focus because that along with analytics that's how Dubas is going to build his team.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Contenders won't be the only teams interested, playoff hopeful teams and Seattle is one if it's true that they are planning to target big ticket FAs.

Kerfoot can play C on line 3 or LW on lines 2 or 3. Currently, the Kraken have Schwartz and Donato on the LW and Gourde, McCann and Wennberg at C. Adding Kerfoot will likely lead them to shopping Wennberg and/or Donato and especially if they land Gaudreau but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be willing to add him.
SEA
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
Additional Details:
If traded it will likely be to clear space for an upgrade, so the likely return Dubas would go for is pick(s) and/or waiver exempt player(s)/cheap 3rd/4th liners.

Leafs have been linked to Dylan Strome, if he does hit the market I think they will try to get him for 3-3.5m. A selling point for Strome to join might be a chance to play with his buddy, Mitch Marner. So, I would expect that Bunting start off on the second line (especially since he's in a contract year) if they land Dylan.
2.
TOR
  1. Strome, Dylan [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Assuming he hits the market, however, he might be acquired via trade (even if they don't qualify him) in a deal that sends Mrazek to CHI. However, for this ACGM I assumed that the Leafs end up buying him out.
CHI
3.
TOR
  1. Mete, Victor [RFA Rights]
  2. Murray, Matt ($3,125,000 retained)
Additional Details:
The Sens will be taking on an additional 2.5m in cap for 2 years, so I would not expect a great return, perhaps Holden would be included instead of Mete but for simplicity/maximizing the amount of cap freed I'll just take on Mete.

Won't bother trying to balance this trade, which likely would be lopsided.

I know OTT has Sanderson and Brannstrom on the left side, but Muzzin only has two years so there's little to no risk in acquiring him in a trade like this. There's also no guarantee that both will be NHL ready during that time.
OTT
  1. Muzzin, Jake
Additional Details:
I don't think Dubas has any interest in trading Muzzin but he might be forced to choose between him and Sandin, and I would hope he chooses Sandin for the future of the team.

Muzzin's full NTC changes to a M-NTC, if he is approached about waiving his NTC perhaps he decides not to rellocate his family but go somewhere close.

I'll assume the only option is Ottawa.

He might, he might not. No one on capfriendly knows what's in his heart. There’s no guarantee that he doesn't decide to waive and there is no guarantee that he only wants to go to a contender.

Fans think of him as old and injury prone but doesn't mean he thinks of himself in that same light. IF he isn't looking to relocate his family, OTT might be a place he decides to waive for, he only has two years left on his contract, and they are moving towards the end of their rebuild.

Im still trying to understand the logic behind the Muzzin trade.

Ottawa ends up with just under 9m in salary over the next two years between eating half of Murray’s money and taking Muzzin’s full contract on.

Obviously Muzzin can still play and the cap hit it any terrible for two years but I’m not sure Dorion would see the swap as a positive when also adding 2m+. Guess it will depend on what the cap situation looks like after free agency and extensions are signed.

He doesn’t need to waive so why would he? It’s hard for me as a fan to speculate and say he would waive it.
