Description
Look at the contract history of Kane and Toews as well as Kopitar and Doughty… the second contracts were between 6.3 million and 7.5 million AAV. What if we had paid Matthews and Marner an AAV in that arena instead of handing over third contract 7 figures salaries? And what if we didn’t waste 11 million a year on John Tavares? These are my changes and my ideas. Dubas PR crew cry away for all I care.

And this is not a “everything Dubas did was bad” post. It’s no secret I’m not a fan but I am more than willing to admit when he gets something right (Bunting and Brodie).

This team is definitely better but I dont think Matthews or Marner would have signed that cheap. I think both were a little overpaid at the time but only by about 1.5M. Matthews at 10M and Marner at 9.5M wouldve made a big difference though

It was a different time, we just left a lockout and Doughty, Kopitar, and Toews really got their paydays because of post-season success. They weren't seen as the world breaker Auston Matthews is, and he has frankly more than lived up to his contract.

Even if we paid Matthews 9 and Marner 8.5 we still have this team or a similar team around the cap and I doubt either turns that down coming off a rookie deal

And I agree with you regarding Matthews but those big 7 figure salaries were only handed out on third contracts. Dubas set the precedent of handing that kind of money to guys coming off ELC. Edmonton of course followed with McDavid. Look at Draisaitl’s contact and that’ll give you a good guess at what Marner was worth. Matthews ar 9-9.5 wild have been absolutely fair coming off his ELC. Then we would have been negotiating probably 12 million AAV for his upcoming contract. Now I think 14-15 is what it’s going to take to keep him
