Description
This edition will take into account a few of the nuggets that have been being talked about on Buffalo Radio & TV over the last few days. I am not going to bother with the Patrick Kane type of rumors as I believe that is just fodder for the dreamers.

This edition is taking a different path than my previous 9 editions have taken specifically with the protection list (my overall opinion of the list has changed in the last 48 hours) and with how I see GMJB building this franchise. GMJB is going to try and develop this franchise like the Penguins franchise has been built (since he helped build it over the last 10 years). The Pegula's have always desired to copy the blueprint out of Pittsburgh (look at the locker room construction, the hiring of previous Penguin higher ups) they finally have a guy in GMJB that actually was involved in the day to day development of the Penguins. I think if we look at the type of hockey played by Pittsburgh that is what GMJB will try to do in Buffalo.

I also think that GMJB will have no problem moving players out that previous GM's were responsible for bringing into the organization if said player(s) does not fit GMJB vision of building the franchise.

I think we start at the top who will be the Head Coach. All along I figured it was Tocchet due to the close working relationship he has had with GMJB and how he handles superstars. What causes me pause at this point is GMJB stating yesterday that he would not be making a decision until early next week. This means to me that Housley and Reirden are still very much in the mix. I also think that Ralph Kruger is also a possibility if the rumors are true that Southampton may be sold. I will throw out one more name Clark Donatelli. If people are creatures of habit and following a script that has proven successful then all we need to do is see what has happened in the past with the Penguins. Twice in recent history they opted to promote their AHL head coach to the position of head coach of the Penguins. It is plausible that GMJB follows that same path and selects Donatelli.

In regard to the protection list. I think GMJB will NOT protect Lehner but instead protect Ullmark. I do believe that Fluery is headed to Vegas from Pittsburgh. This means Fluery is the right now goalie for Vegas. What Vegas will need is a goalie in 3 years. By protecting Lehner it exposes Ullmark who very well could be the 'goalie' in 3 years. Lehner is a now goalie and Vegas would not take on Fluery and a Lehner contract totaling a combined 10+ million. So expose Lehner.

Protection List:

O'Reily
Carrier
Okposo
Girgensons
Larsson
Foligno
Kane

Risto
McCabe
Austin

Ullmark

I do not see GMJB giving up more than a 3rd Round pick for Vegas to take a specific player (Moulson, Bogo, Ennis or Gorges). It is my belief that GMJB really values draft picks with his current situation. The way he is going to build HIS franchise is through draft picks therefore he will not be giving away draft capital.

Austin, Dupuy, Kea, Rodrigues & Schneider will all be signed and sent to Rochester.

Pedersen will be signed as GMJB will pointed to how the Murray/Fluery situation was handled and he will have every opportunity to compete for the job. He will stress to Cal that he did not trade a first round pick for Lehner and he did not protect Lehner. GMJB thinks that in 3 years it will be between Ullmark & Pedersen to be tending the net in Buffalo.

As always I really do appreciate your feedback and comments. As such they are welcomed and encouraged!!!

Expansion Draft. Since GMJB will not include a high draft choice McPhee takes a serviceable 5th or 6th D man at a price. I also wanted to see how the team shapes up if we are forced to manage around the Gorges, Moulson, Ennis & Bogo contracts.

I really think this is the trade that happens with Kane. The LA Kings need to find a team that has the ability to take on Brown's lengthy contract and in return they need to make sure they do not take on any dead salary so a draft pick and prospect is included.

Dustin Brown is an absolute non-starter. His contract will sink us down the road when we need to give Eichel and Reinhart their paydays and sign the complementary players needed to compete for the cup.

On another note, Vegas doesn't necessarily have to keep Lehner if they draft him. I think they'd much rather take him and flip him for a second round pick or a prospect than take Justin Falk.

Thank you for the feedback it is very much appreciated and considered..... trust me I am not a fan of Brown or his contract but you have to take the bitter with the sweet....

Under my scenario #10 we would have 19 Million under a flat cap of 73 million in 2018/2019.... My guess is that for next year the cap will be around $75 million which will give us $21 Million & 15 players under contract. I would expect (assuming sub par seasons from Moulson & Ennis) that they would be candidate for a buyout freeing up a couple of million more to use to sign players. By 2018/2019 players I have in Rochester should be ready to move on up to the Big team Kempe, Nylander, Baptiste, Bailey, Smith. If 4 of the youngsters arrive at an average of $1,000,000 per player that will leave us $20 Million to sign Jack, Sam, Carrier, Fasching & Antipin which I think is very doable.

In relation to Lehner the goal trade market has notoriously been soft. I do not see McPhee making a select Lehner and move him proposition. I think it is too much of a risk when there are solid young goaltenders that will be exposed in the expansion draft. Lehner at $4,000,000 is not a bargain for a team that could sign other FA goalies without giving up assets to acquire.

Who do you think ends up being our coach?

I'm not too concerned with our cap situation in the next couple years but Brown is on the books until 2022. By that time we should be a true contender, and that $5.875M could buy us a scoring winger or extra defenseman to push us to the next level.

I agree that the goalie market is weak, but I think Vegas could still get a second or even third round pick out of Calgary or maybe Philly. And even a third round pick has more value to them than Justin Falk. It could work out, but it's a ballsy move and would backfire if Vegas called our bluff.

As for the head coach, my gut says Housley. But I trust Botts and won't be mad if he goes in another direction.

Good point on the cap situation with Brown in 3 years.... the way I look at it is at that point you can buy him out as an option. I just see the biggest issue with trying to obtain a solid D man is that it will come with a bad contract. D men have tremendously high value as so many teams need one or two..... the teams that have the luxury to deal one are up against the cap and will need to dump a contract (Anaheim, Minnesota & LA come to mind).

I think Botts goes with who he knows (though he did play a couple of season with Housley in Calgary)... I still can not get past the number of years with Tocchet and that Tocchet has head coaching experience where Wowwy Housley does not......

We're very lucky to be looking for a top pairing defenseman right now, while the expansion draft is forcing teams to consider dealing defensemen that would otherwise be nowhere near the trade block. Teams won't want to lose good players for nothing, so we'll hopefully be able to snag a good defenseman for below their normal value.

I think we'd be able to make a deal with the Kings around Kane and Muzzin without taking back Brown.
