Description

The first 20 years after the franchises relocation to Carolina, the canes drafted ONE Russian player. ONE! Obviously something would have had to go wrong with that one player for the canes to not draft a single Russian till 2018. In 2001, the canes drafted 15th overall, Russian defenseman Igor Knyazev. I don’t blame you if you have never heard of Knyazev because he never played an NHL game. In fact he never even signed in the NHL. It’s clear this incident rubbed the canes management the wrong way because they didn’t draft a single Russian again till 2018 and with that pick they took svechnikov. Svech was the obvious pick but it was a barrier that was broken by the canes by drafting a Russian. Since 2019, the canes have drafted at least 2 Russians a draft every draft. Partly due to the large draft capital but by also having Russian games either more scouted or just scouted to begin with. Obviously the canes haven’t been against bringing in Russians as they have signed players like Alex semin and traded for others like valentin zykov (yea the canes haven’t been the best with Russians).

True but if you draft a Russian once in the first 20 years, something is obviously up. That’s like 200 plus prospects drafted and one Russian. Something is up for sure.

we didnt have a Russian scout until Dundon came on board and ponied up the money for one (or how ever many we have now). We didnt draft Russians because we didnt know anything about them.

Kinda dumb to just completely ignore 3 major leagues for prospects in the MHL VHL and KHL. The canes automatically rules themselves out of so many great mid round picks. Imagine if the canes picked just one of sheshterkin, kaprizov, sorokin, kucherov, buchnevich, orlov, or any of the other great kid round Russians. Those are the types of picks the current regime would make. So glad we’re going in a better direction.
